Been excited for this for way too long to let the price get me down.

Gotta admit, was pretty disheartened seeing that price tag. While the prototype is very beautiful and detailed (I especially love the application of the paint shading), it's getting harder to justify multiple figure purchases if most scales are going to fall in this price range.

Remembering only a few years ago when a lot of people thought Max Factory's "Wonderful Hobby Selection" figures were way overpriced - now more and more this seems to be the norm, rather than the exception.

Preordered! I wanted an Alice figure since playing the game on the PS2. I'm excited to have her as the perfect centerpiece for my Odin Sphere collection! What a beautiful piece of artwork!!! ❤️

I'd think it would be the opposite. Again, I'm sure people are cancelling orders for figures due out soon(ish) which, as you said, would cause an excess of those figures. But by the same logic, very few people will be pre-ordering this one and therefore not many of them will be made in the first place? And as for them being unable to reduce their production run--wouldn't they lose even more money making a product they can't sell, versus just producing a limited run? (Unless it's a matter of making back pre-production costs?)

Valid question about reducing production levels, and it comes down to the manufacturers staying in business. They have been able to ride the wave of increased demand and prices for a product that has only become cheaper to manufacture (more parts being 3D printed, better casting methods and material quality reducing rejected molds, etc). So the businesses have expanded and employ a lot of people, the majority of which are based in China where lock downs are lifted or in the process of. The facilities there won't take an order unless you meet a minimum order threshold, which is in the 10s of thousands nowadays. This might not be the case for smaller manufactures, but it most definitely is the case for companies like Alter, GSC, Koto, etc.

This makes preordering pointless with the recession happening, because all the prices are completely unrealistic to the demand. There will be only one alternative to large minimum orders, and that's cancelling figures outright and not building them. For figures like this one, there will be a cost associated with cancelling the figure because they already paid the publisher/rights holder for the license to produce this characters likeness. So cancelling becomes a cost too, something nobody can afford at the moment.

I'd say 90% of all figure announcements will still get made, but there will be big price reductions for the next year or two as they all start to pile up in warehouses as nobody is buying. The aftermarket is already taking a hit from what I've seen in the MFC classifieds here, and that's always the first to react to rapidly evolving situations like we live in now. Patience and keeping an eye out for sales in 2021 and 2022 is the best advice everyone can take right now.
