Planning to add more informational threads for the group soon, but they'll be a little while since I'm going through something and I have very little energy. Thank you!

Hi everyone! After discussing with the creator of this club, we've been able to come to an understanding together and I've decided to rejoin. Some of the recent changes were made due to my suggestions (that I'm very thankful for) and some were made thanks to his efforts. Everything was carefully considered while thinking about what would be best for everyone but if anyone here has any further suggestions on guidelines and how to make this club better and more inclusive, please do share them!

Also, I would once again like to apologize if I made anyone feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. It was not my intention to attack anyone or their headcanons, just to open up discussions about them given their very personal natures. I believe that with the new forum threads this has been established and I look forward to participating in them. I will soon add a character suggestion myself and am curious to know what other people think, so please don't hesitate to respond. In the spirit of Japanese customs; yoroshiku onegaishimasu! :)

Alright, then please allow me to say this one last thing, as I feel that my words have been twisted.

I never said characters had to be ''autistic enough'', I merely wanted users in this club to discuss on characters possibly being autistic. You know, like other clubs and people on Tumblr and Twitter discuss headcanons? Instead of going 'I personally relate to this character based on one/two traits so therefore they are autistic in my book = let's code them as such sitewide'. That, and for this club to have some much-needed guidelines. If discussing headcanons is not something you are willing to do and is even seen as ''actively harming members'' then this club is not for me. I have been open and polite about my intentions and don't appreciate me being framed as exclusionist just because I asked to discuss. Also, to comment on the new guidelines, to my knowledge I have not used any slurs (if I did then I apologize - and please point those out because I am genuinely not aware of any?) and have never tried to mock anyone. I hoped we could all come together and make this space a place to engage with one another as fellow autistic fans but it seems that is not wanted. Lastly, I noticed a user created a topic to discuss anime as an autistic medium, which is in a way what I wanted to achieve, yet I will not comment on it as my words are making others feel uncomfortable and could once again be twisted into something I never said.

I won't bother you guys any longer and will leave this club of my own accord.

View spoilerHide spoilerSorry for the late reply! Life happened and I wasn't really able to log in much. I realize this conversation is already a bit older but I hope we can continue with it. I also apologize in advance for the length of my comment but this is something close to my heart so I wanted to be thorough in my explation :)
I agree that autism presents in a lot of different ways, and it wasn't my intention to say that you can't see your own traits in Alice, Iruma, or any other character. It's just that, generally speaking, I think it's too simple to say that a character is e.g. autistic/AD(H)D/LGBTQ+ because of a few traits that happen to align with one person's personal experiences. I can't seem to find the right words and I don't want to sound like a gatekeeping or ableist asshole, so let me put forth two other examples. If I were to say that
1) ''Mikazuki Munechika from Touken Ranbu is autistic because he's quiet and can't really read the room just like me, and therefore I feel connected to him because of my autism'', then I would still feel that he shouldn't immediately be linked to this club seeing as loads of people are like that. And if I were to say that
2) ''Hazuki Nagisa from Free! is always hyper, can't sit still, and ignores a lot of social conventions'' that doesn't mean he'd be ADHD and should instantly be linked to a club for that.
What I'm trying to say is that's it's perfectly fine to relate to a fictional character on the basis of one's own diagnoses or experiences (or orientation for that matter), yet it seems counterproductive to me to then basically 'code' them as such to other people by linking them to this club. Mainly because MFC is getting more widely known and used, and clubs linked to characters here are very prominently displayed. MyAnimeList also has clubs where you can link characters according to traits and/or headcanons but they are displayed in a different tab and quite obviously shown as not affiliated with anything official (even if some are called Official Club). I say this because MFC users and random lurkers look up specific character merchandise on this website and then see that that character is linked to a club called Autistic Characters & Collectors. Which is fine, nothing wrong there, except that this is largely speculation on our part and often even just on one person's part. Yet the club name makes it seem like it's not speculation but facts.
You never know how other people will react to seeing a character prominently linked to a club that seems to state they are autistic or LGBTQ+. There are still many people who are deeply uncomfortable with or outright hostile against anyone who doesn't fit the status quo, be it neurodivergent folks or any other minority groups (not to mention how many still gleefully use the r-word). Unfortunately, I've found that many users here happily spew homophobic, transphobic, and ableist words around and don't take issue with ganging up on users who disagree (something I personally experienced on here).
I don't mean all of this in a ''We should hide in shame because autism is bad and we should feel bad'' kinda way because that is not how I feel, at all! For me this is purely from a logical viewpoint that even if character X has trait A and B that are often seen in autistic people or make one autistic person relate, that doesn't mean they are. Only linking officially confirmed characters isn't a good idea either because that would reduce the list to almost zero, yet we could find a better way to rec and link characters in my opinion. This club isn't that big, so one suggestion could be for (at least three) users who know the recced character to discuss on it, which would also help with the club activity. And a potential way of solving the matter with the club name and its associations among users, is simply re-naming it to something like '(Headcanoned) Autistic Characters & Collectors'. A difference of only one word but one that creates an important distinction. I also like that name because it's simple and would include autistics who aren't officially diagnosed but suspect they are (because getting diagnosed is often not quick, easy, or accessible to everyone either). It's also already in the club description, so it would make sense for the club name to reflect it.
If we could only link canonically confirmed/diagnosed characters the list would be pretty short, unfortunately. :/ Although I do think that anime/manga/etcetera are getting better at showing diversity, meaning not just cisgender heterosexual neurotypical able-bodied characters that come off as white. I'm okay with characters being headcanoned as anything but I have doubts about just one person saying so and the character then immediately being linked. For more explanation on why please read the above.
I have asked the suggester personally and still don't agree with Suzuki Iruma and Asmodeus Alice being linked to this club. I would request for them to be removed but the suggester does feel like they should be linked. How do we solve situations like these? Also, please consider my suggestion of re-naming the club. I know I'm a new member who seemingly came out of nowhere but it's a suggestion purely made with the love fans have for their favorite characters in mind (and based on my personal logic). Perhaps a poll on the name change would be a good idea? That way we can see how everyone feels about it :)

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're proposing. Do you want every single character entry somehow verified before they're added to the club? Because I can see that turning into a mess really fast, especially with the huge backlog of characters that have already been added from sources not every club member knows. As far as I know no one's recommended an entry in bad faith. I wouldn't be against having more guidelines but I'm not sure how exactly you'd make a list of what's seen as "acceptable" or not, which could quickly turn into an uncomfortable issue.

I think you might be taking the club name too seriously. There are plenty of clubs on MFC that link characters and figure entries; I don't see why it should be a problem for this club to do the same. If anything the way characters have clubs linked to them on their encyclopedia page is an issue with MFC's layout.

I just thought I'd add my two cents on the earlier comments and I wasn't really expecting to come back to such a long reply, so I'll probably be stepping out now. I do hope everything can be peacefully resolved but I'm honestly not sure how the club members or admin would implement these changes without causing more problems or being exclusionist

oumasaiHace 1 mes#84489897snipoumasaiHace 1 mes#84489914snipNo no, it's okay! I also apologize if it seemed that I was going off at you in particular. I usually just quote anyone I want to reply to and then make my main argument to the person whose points I wanted to respond to the most. In this case, you saying how you read characters to be autistic even without obvious traits was the catalyst for me wanting to point out how that doesn't always make sense on a larger scale than just a personal one

You're correct in that there aren't any guidelines, and you didn't break any rules. If anything, I'm the one worried about how my comments are being received. I have the tendency to get pretty passionate about the things I love and care for, and will often overanalyze (unimportant) things that other people are just doing for fun because the way it's organized doesn't seem logical to me. Regarding that, I would actually prefer if this club were to have at least some guidelines, even if that might be a little tricky. I'm sure the admin will also read our comments since I quoted them, so I'll wait for their reply on my suggestions

I'm sorry if I've made this club become uncomfortable for you (or anyone else reading this) and thank you for saying that you don't mind Alice and Iruma being removed. Because I'm actually pretty uncomfortable with them being linked

Also I apologize if this came off as aggressive at all, I just genuinely don't know what you want me to do about this. I didn't break any rules and I have no way of controlling how this club is handled. I don't know why you're talking to me specifically.

If having Iruma and Alice linked to this club upsets you I'm fine with them being removed, I don't want people uncomfortable just because I personally view them differently. I do not run this club nor am I anyone with any authority. I just use this site to keep track of things & have been submitting characters that read as autistic to me here because other people were doing it and it seemed enjoyable. There are no guidelines, so I just went off of my personal feelings. I don't see how any this is my responsibility. I just submitted two characters I saw my own traits in, that's it. If you want to overhaul the club to have guidelines for headcanons you're free to discuss that with the owner since I'm positive Iruma and Alice are not the only characters here that don't fit your criteria, but I have no part in that.
