I'm going with HLJ (Hobby Link Japan) for most of my 2022 pre-orders, because they at least give a choice between Fed-Ex and DHL, and I can also use their 'Private Warehouse' to manage my shipments. I'm going with the GSC global shop for any GSC products - you pay more for the items, but they only charge 2,000 JPY for shipping (whether it be Fed-Ex or DHL).
Oh HLJ seems like a really good alternative. I've had an iffy experience with them in the past, since they had trouble fulfilling my order, but I'd be willing to give them another shot. It's great they offer Fed-Ex too, since I've found they are slightly cheaper to Canada.

I've avoided buying large things so I don't pay with DHL, but this is ridiculous. Not only is DHL already damn expensive, add to that guaranteed custom fees and now what??? A freaking 17% increase? DHL officially becomes unaffordable.
It's been 1 year since they cut EMS and I miss it dearly. If they remove air small packet unregistered then it's officially over for the hobby.

If you don't mind me asking, which shops have you been using? Just curious, since Amiami only providing DHL has been quite awful for some time.

Only other option besides DHL, EMS and Surface atm is FedEx afaik and it's generally more expensive than DHL.
Is there another?
For my shipping needs, Fed-Ex is easier on my wallet than DHL. DHL fees the hell out of Canadians on top of their shipping costs.

Yeah, I saw this on AmiAmi this morning. An average increase of 17% for Canada and the U.S., price gouging is what that is. I suggested to AmiAmi that they should look into providing more choices for shipping companies a few months ago. They did not heed my advice, so since September, all my pre-orders haver been made at other shops that give me more choice. AA has already lost 200K JPY worth of business from me for 2022.

can someone explain to me why EMS / regular airmail are not available to US / Canada and yet available to other countries. is it shipping companies refusing to ship or just really strict in US / Canada right now?
Japan Post packages are boarded on passenger flights and due to reduced flights, they increased costs to some countries and stopped shipping to others. They can't fit enough packages to offer more than EMS and even then they need to increase price in order to lower package numbers. Also, EMS is available to US.
DHL however uses their own planes so their increase is just price gouging.

Oh wow, this is rough. I ordered
ITEM #1233593
through them, I’d really hate to cancel her but if DHL’s going to be insane… does anyone know if this is going to be permanent or just because of shipping demand right now?
