Right Stuf Holiday Sale Recs?Right Stuf Holiday Sale Recs?Ask MFC

Right Stuf is my go-to source for manga and anime, and I always enjoy browsing their discounted items, but I've never taken advantage of their annual "12 Days of Savings" holiday sales.

This year's sale might be different, though. I haven't kept up with anime much (am more of a manga reader), and some of the discounts in this year's sale are pretty huge. There's some sale manga I've never read before as well. What anime/manga would you guys recommend?

Some basic info to keep in mind when making your recs: my favorite manga/anime genres are seinen, adventure, sci-fi, and foodie, though I also like good comedies and slice-of-life series. I do not like harem (reverse harem is okay if it's really good), ecchi, most moe, and most horror. Prefer manga for BL/yaoi. If you want to see a detailed list of what I've liked (and haven't liked), here's my Anime-Planet details: anime | manga

What I will probably buy:
- Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone - I'm a longtime Eva fan, but haven't seen any of the new movies yet and am curious about them.
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Season One - This would be for my husband, who likes the show.
- Grave of the Fireflies - It's Ghibli, so this is a no-brainer for me.
- Easy Japanese Cooking: Bento Love - :9

What I'm considering (recs don't have to be limited to this list, though!):
- Yawara! - I'm a Naoki Urasawa fan thanks to Pluto and 20th Century Boys, and I don't know what the chances of the manga coming to the US are.
- Nanaka 6/17 - Saw an episode of this at ANN to see if I liked it, and it was okay.
- GaoGaiGar bundle - Don't know much about this show. I love Gurren Lagann, though, and hear that this is similarly over-the-top.
- Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt - Gurren Lagann made me a true believer of GAINAX again (I didn't like Mahoromatic or Abenobashi and had given up on them after that), so naturally, I'm curious about this newer series from said studio.

Please do NOT recommend:
- Blue Exorcist, Aria - Tried and didn't like; they were decent, but just didn't click with me.
- Most popular shonen shows (Dragon Ball, One Piece, etc.) - I like early DB, but that's about it.
- Fullmetal Alchemist, X - I've either read or am reading the original manga versions. I'd like to stick to anime that I haven't already consumed in manga form.
- Redline, Summer Wars - There's a chance I could get these for Christmas :3
- Princess Jellyfish - Holding out hope that the manga will be licensed.
- Stuff I already own and/or have read/watched (see links above).
- Blu-rays - I don't have a player.
- Dub-only releases - I need my subs!

Thank you in advance for any recommendations you have!

ETA: I've ordered Detroit Metal City, Yawara!, and both seasons of GitS: SAC for the first go-round. Will look into picking up the rest of my "probably buy" list, as well as Oldboy and maybe some other things, when the rest of the sales go up :D Thanks again!

Of course, if you're just buying it for the first time, the newer Blu-rays would probably be the way to go, as the post-processing done on Funimation's end probably trumps whatever your DVD/Blu-ray player can do on-the-fly with the DVD set, but you're not going to notice much of a difference, if any, because they've just been run through some filters. It was rendered as native 480p, and unfortunately, there's not a lot that can be done. Funimation caught a lot of flak for the original release, since they scrubbed it with Digital Noise Reduction filters so much that it lost much of the grain that was supposed to be there in parts. Apparently they listened, and the new slim release should be better, but again, just wanted to make sure you know you're not missing out on much extra if you already have the DVDs. Sorry for the long-winded response, video/audiophile here in addition to figure collector. Too many damn hobbies.

Actually I think that's a pretty damn awesome hobby hahaha. To be honest I have no clue what I'm doing with it comes to certain things. That was actually going to be the first Blu Ray i purchased (It being my favorite series and all) so now I'm really glad I didn't since i would have not only been infinitely disappointing but my expectations of Blu ray would have been smashed XD; (=_= I had to recollect all over again when it switched from VHS to DVD permanently so I'm hesitant to start buying Bluray's)

R_Kasaharahace 7 años#1256611I most definitely want to read it, but a handful of the volumes are out of print (Viz seems to be bad about that with certain series) :/

YESSS THANK YOU! LOL sorry but someone else finally said it. Viz drives me insane with it's weird printing cycles! I have so many series I've been trying to collect from Viz and they just will randomly not print a few volumes for ages. :/ Don't worry it will show up again EVENTUALLY but they take forever. I made the mistake of thinking something was out of print forever and paid 25$ for a used copy because i was missing one volume and then the reprint randomly came out later. =_=''' ((Also Monster is amazing it's the only anime that i was vocally involved in I ended up so into it I was yelling at the TV "RUN RUN NOOO SHOOT THEM" XD))

Metrogenichace 7 años#1256586Absolutely read Monster (or watch, the anime does a great job of capturing the manga's spirit); it's an incredible story. One of my top three anime or manga for sure.

R_Kasaharahace 7 años#1256538I haven't read or seen Monster, but I'd like to. Thanks for the info; think I'll try out the first volume of Oldboy.

Gothlequinhace 7 años#1256431As far as it kind of gives you that gritty feel. Mature, suspense quality to it? It also gives the audience a real sense of not really knowing everything that's going on. It's based on crime, revenge and mystery. (I don't know if you've ever seen Urasawa's Monster but it reminded me a lot of that series as well) I read the whole series in like two days I think! (It's nice because 8 volumes is the whole series so it's relatively short)

Metrogenichace 7 años#1256170Advice: If you have the Samurai Champloo DVDs, no reason to get the Blu-rays. They're just upconverts, and not the greatest. I haven't heard anything but complaints from people who did you're thinking about. Although this is supposedly better than the first Blu-ray release, which apparently removed grain intentionally added to the DVDs, making them inferior to the orignal DVD set. Also, the price for this particular set often drops to $20 or below on Amazon, so this isn't that great of a deal.

That's really disappointing to hear and nice to know before I shell out the extra dollars for it. Thanks!

Gothlequin: Is Oldboy Urasawa-like in its plotting/characterization? The art style looks kind of similar. As for Samurai Champloo, that might be a "get"; my husband liked it and I still need to finish Christmas shopping for him ;)

Acerca de este blog

I don't write blog posts here as often as I should, but at least I'm writing at all!

Posts here generally concern figures and other collectables. For reviews, I often like to highlight items which may have gone overlooked, or are otherwise interesting. In general, I strive for high-quality posts above all else.

I also maintain a blog here which is mostly about video games, and sometimes about manga and anime.
