Customising Kotobukiya's Aya Shyameimaru Figure.Customising Kotobukiya's Aya Shyameimaru Figure.Diary

Just thought I'd make a post talking about and sharing the figure customisation I just completed. This had been an idea I'd had in my head for quite some time. It's something I admittedly probably never would have gotten around to if it wasn't for the fact I am so insanely bored... But I'm glad I've been bored now! This was a great little project.

The Idea -

I absolutely love Touhou. The games are great fun, the music is fantastic and the characters are awesome. I've always liked adding a little extra to my figures (normally just temporarily, for nice photos) in my collection so a while ago an idea struck me. What if I combined a figure of a Touhou character with elements from the game they came from? Namely, one of the Spell cards. A complete replica of one of those incredibly easy to get killed by collections of bullets. Now, This isn't exactly an original idea, just see things like this exquisite garage kit of two of my favourite characters from the series: ITEM #41383 But I really liked the concept of potentially creating something like this myself.

Starting Out -

One idea really stuck in my head. It is the spellcard Aya Shyameimaru uses in Touhou 10, its name 'Wind God Hidden in Leaves.' I don't know why this one stuck but for months I've spent time trying to work out the practical side of making a model of this. I'd thought about a few other spellcards a bit too but this is the one I went forward with in the end.

Here is a screenshot I took of it in game. It's not at all easy photographing these whilst playing the game, by the way.

Picking which figure to make it a customisation for didn't take long. Kotobukiya's Aya is definitely the most dynamic Aya figure I have. A figure with lots of movement is exactly what I needed. Combine that with the fact that she arrived at my house with unmentioned damage (was not happy about that, oh well) and it wasn't going to be something I'd be terrified of touching for fear of breaking it...

So what was I going to need to make this thing? I worked it out and here's what I ended up buying:

Wire - Just plain and simple wire. I wasn't honestly expecting to have to buy this but It turns out I'd ran out...

Beads - It took quite a bit of time to track down exactly what I needed. It was really tough getting something both exactly the right shape and a colour somewhat close to what the original bullets looked like.

Glue - I needed to buy glue for probably the hundreth time now. I'd used up all the glue I already had fixing broken figures I'd bought because of super discounted prices.

All in all it cost me about five pounds. Not bad at all!

Above are my materials. I really like the beads. The flowers and leaves a later addition that I though I'd try out after finding them in a flower press that was under my bed for some still unknown reason.

Building the Customisation

First stage was to make the wire frame. Plan was to make a circular frame that I could fit Aya in the middle of so the bullets could be moving outwards in all directions. I made two circles of wire and then began making eight addition bits of wire that would be attached at even intervals around the circle and bent around in the same direction to form the third and final large circle of wire. Here's some pictures

This is one of the individual bits of wire.

This is the completed wire frame.

After checking it fitted okay around Aya I moved on to attaching the beads. This took FOREVER. But with lots of good Touhou music covers to listen to I eventually pulled through with many stuck together fingers. Unfortunately I forgot to photograph the thing before I put it around the figure again, so onto the final result!

Completed Customisation -

So here we are. There is a fair bit of glue that needs cleaned off of it and the final shape is more an oval than a circle but i'm super pleased with it. It does take up a hell of a lot of space though. It seems my collection is going to need a fair amount of reorganising. I think the leaves and flowers ended really pulling the whole project together. I should also note that I swapped the camera she comes with for the little red notebook that belongs to her figma. Why? Because I thought it looked cool. Anyhow, Time for photos.

The back. You can see the wire stays (somewhat) steady because it is wedged between two of the wing feathers.

Now for a final shot there was almost no point taking because my phone camera is not very good. :P

There we have it. This was great fun and I have a few other customisations in mind, though they are all quite a bit smaller and don't involve the whole Spell card idea. I can see myself doing another project simlair to this for another character though in the future. Hope you enjoyed having a look, and maybe next time I'll remember to take more pictures showing the process of me making it!

KotoniHace 1 mes#79615370Oh, this is an amazing idea! And the end result looks absolutely spectacular! I can just imagine the frustration putting it together though.

Yup, hah. It was really annoying at points! Glueing the beads on was certainly a pain, but I'd probably have to say making the wire frame was the most challenging part.

Great work indeed! Kudos!

This was such a cool idea and the final result makes the figure stand out a lot more. Adding the leaves was a good call. It fills up blank space and makes the display more visually interesting. Great work.

Definitely - that's a great idea. I'm thinking having them coming up in a spiral from the base...
