Japanese snacks, drink and candy loot with mini reviews!Japanese snacks, drink and candy loot with mini reviews!Loot

Hello MFC! Here I am again with a Japanese snacks, drinks and candy loot! And don't worry, I have not bought and ate these items in the middle of a pandemic. They were originally bought, received and mostly eaten in August 2019.

Packaging

https://i.ibb.co/8mH9VcB/IMG-4151.jpg

The delivery of this package went everything but smooth...at first delivery I was at home, but the mailman decided to ignore my address and just drop a note to 'come back another time'. The 'another time' turned out to be 'thrown against my front door in the middle of a heat wave, basking in the sun while I was at work'. I'm lucky that my contents survived the heat and also were not stolen by any neighbors.

Oh, and there was a huge dent on the side of the box, but that was the least of my worries at that point.

https://i.ibb.co/Mc6j09K/IMG-4152.jpg

When I opened it up, I was happy to see nothing got damaged or melted. As always, there was a 'Thank you for your order'-leaflet from Candysan, together with a freebie: a sour apple candy.

The complete loot

https://i.ibb.co/SJTNZsq/IMG-4178.jpg

Inside this order was the following (from left to right, top to bottom):
- Puku Puku Tai - Mint
- Sour Apple Candy bonus
- Bubble Bath Candy
- Country Ma'am - Bake Shop - Cheese Tart
- Crayon Shin Chan Okonomiyaki & Beer DIY Kit 3
- Yaokin Pack - Small
- Odangoya san - Japanese cakes
- Lifeguard energy drink
- Botani Potato - Rosemary & Garlic
- Cratz - Consommé
- Rich Giza - BBQ
- Pizza Potato - Margherita
- Boss - Mountain Blend
- Botani Potato - Basil & Mayonnaise

https://i.ibb.co/3mPNHXB/IMG-4179.jpg

Whenever I get a package like this I sort the items I got on 'best by' date, and eat them in that order (unless I get a very specific craving for another item in there)!

Mini reviews
Sour Apple Candy bonus

https://i.ibb.co/XLj8scJ/IMG-4153.jpg

It tasted like an apple Chupa Chups lolly pop res.cloudinary.... , but a bit more sour. Pretty nice!

Yaokin Pack - Small

https://i.ibb.co/PxvD7LP/IMG-4154.jpg

A pack with assorted traditional Japanese candy. Some of these I've seen before, others were a mystery. From a lot of them I don't know the original full name. I was curious to try these out and well...the results are mixed!

https://i.ibb.co/TMY2Fbc/IMG-4155.jpg

Umaibo are a kind of round, puffed cheeto. This purple one was slightly spicy and tasted a bit...fishy...shrimp flavor maybe?

A later Google search revealed it was 'mentai' flavor: Fish eggs with chili peppers. I was not too far off!

https://i.ibb.co/D9KDPGd/IMG-4156.jpg

The white umaibo was cheese flavored and literally tasted like a big cheeto.

https://i.ibb.co/KGMhHdv/IMG-4163.jpg

Now this yellow umaibo was instead of a crunchy savory stick a hard candy and it was...bad bad bad bad bad!!! Blegh!! They basically took a sweet candy and put together with it the savory taste of grilled corn to make this unholy combination of overly sugary grilled corn! It may not sound that bad in writing but trust me, it was bad.

https://i.ibb.co/wrJ4C4R/IMG-4157.jpg

Luckily this combination of sweet and savory rice crackers, were there to clean my taste palette. They were a bit basic, but pretty good.

https://i.ibb.co/9ZV5vYS/IMG-4158.jpg

I was a bit scared to try the 'umai jelly', because in general I am not really a fan of jello...that's why I was happily surprised when I ate it! It was a very refreshing berry-like flavor, a bit like lemonade.

https://i.ibb.co/yqYpjtR/IMG-4159.jpg

These cute little Kompeito candy stars (as seen in many anime) were crispy sugar bites with a bit of a shiny coating. I was expecting these to be hard candies, so I was surprised at how crunchy they are! There were white (just sugar), yellow (lemon) and pink (strawberry) stars. The strawberry were my favorite.

https://i.ibb.co/xSN5djr/IMG-4160.jpg

This one was like a huge, foamy pez candy, very nice!

https://i.ibb.co/kJDSC3n/IMG-4162.jpg

This twisty marshmallow was not much different to the version sold in my local supermarket, except for it being a bit less sweet.

https://i.ibb.co/qkC8fWs/IMG-4161.jpg

I was very lucky to have saved the melon packaging as the last item of the pack, because it turned out to be gum! There were 4 tiny pieces of gum inside, making about 2 normal sized pieces of gum. The taste was OK, but as with most non-mint flavored gum, it lost it's flavor pretty quickly.

Overall I think this Yaokin Pack was nice to have tried out and you get good value for your money, but as my experiences with the contents were a bit mixed I don't think I'll buy it a second time.

Botani Potato - Basil & Mayonnaise

https://i.ibb.co/znFNXf0/IMG-4165.jpg

My first impression was that these look like and have a similar texture to...dog biscuits. While that is not really a good first impression, the taste of these was quite nice! Not sure if I would buy them a second time, but I was content while munching these.

Botani Potato - Rosemary & Garlic

https://i.ibb.co/JQdw4C5/IMG-4164.jpg

A bit more heavy in flavor than the one mentioned above, it also tastes a bit more like potato. Similar to the other one, I enjoyed it, but will probably not buy it a second time.

Puku Puku Tai - Mint

https://i.ibb.co/475gvgn/IMG-4166.jpg

Now this one, oh man, this one, was a V E R Y bad buy!!! It was advertised as a crunchy wafer with mint filling, so I prepared myself for it to taste like breath mints, chewing gum, peppermint or something like that, but it was like munching on gritty toothpaste. It took me a lot of effort to eat only half, and after that I threw it out. The cookie itself looked cute though...

Cratz - Consommé

I've been wanting to try one of the Cratz flavors for a while, but was always distracted by other snacks I came across.

https://i.ibb.co/tpbCXGc/IMG-4167.jpg

They are like big chopped-pretzel-shaped croutons and this specific pack comes with a strong broth flavor. The packaging promised to be 90% crouton and that was definitely true, I only found a few stray almonds in there. Interestingly enough the almonds were with their peel. Personally I would have liked some more almonds in there, because the croutons were so heavily flavored that something more neutral to mix it with would have been nice.

In general I liked these Cratz, but I don't think I will buy this specific flavor a second time. I have been eyeing the edamame flavor Cratz for a while, so I might pick those up in the future!

Odangoya san - Japanese cakes

https://i.ibb.co/7z93DFg/IMG-4168.jpg

As this is an extensive DIY kit, I will later make a separate blog for these! These are the ones where the end result is sweet candy, rather than miniature versions of the actual food.

Pizza Potato - Margherita

https://i.ibb.co/mJThfwv/IMG-4169.jpg

These had a very strong mozzarella smell and taste. It was practically like eating mozzarella chips, I did not really taste any herbs or tomato as there would be on a margarita pizza. These chips were pretty nice overall, but I rather would eat some actual fresh mozzarella than chips flavored like them. So I don't think I would buy them again. It's a recommendation for mozzarella addicts, though!

Crayon Shin Chan Okonomiyaki & Beer DIY Kit 3

https://i.ibb.co/mbrx6q4/IMG-4170.jpg

This is also a more extensive DIY for which I will make a separate blog later. Even though this food also looks savory, you are making candy and lemonade.

Bubble Bath Candy

https://i.ibb.co/V2QLssD/IMG-4171.jpg

You guessed it! There will be a separate blog for the mini model kit and candy drink as well!

Rich Giza - BBQ

https://i.ibb.co/254VcvP/IMG-4172.jpg

Both the flavor and structure of these snacks were really similar to the locally for me available "Doritos Bits" www.fivestartra... . I'm actually wondering right now if it's maybe the exact same combinations of spices... Anyhow, the taste is nice. Although I don't buy Doritos Bits a lot, I do enjoy them every once in a while. This makes for me this snack uninteresting as I have a chip tasting (almost) the same over here, so I won't be buying this one again. At least you got a lot of chips in the package though, so this Giza definitely feels like value for your money!

Country Ma'am - Bake Shop - Cheese Tart

https://i.ibb.co/wMYPzV8/IMG-4173.jpg

Individually packaged (not that it stops me from eating multiple) soft cookies. They have quite a strong lemon smell, but the lemon flavor is more distant in the cookie itself. Actually, I would say the main flavor of the cookie is butter, followed by slight cheesecake-ish flavor and then a faint hint of lemon. After eating two 'raw' ones and checking the packaging for calories (as my stomach felt quite heavy so I wanted to check they're 75 calories each cookie by the way), I saw the instruction on the packaging to put them in the microwave for heating. So I heated my third one and it was indeed a lot nicer when warmed up! Overall they were pretty nice, but I would only recommended them to die-hard soft cookie fans that like a strong butter flavor.

And now for the drinks!

Boss - Mountain Blend

https://i.ibb.co/59Rbjkq/IMG-4174.jpg

The favorite coffee from my husband. Whenever I buy from Candysan, I throw in at least one can. If you like milky iced coffee, this one is very recommendable!

Lifeguard Energy Drink

https://i.ibb.co/cwtRVBZ/IMG-4175.jpg

I really like the design of the can, which made me pick it up!

The soda was a lightly sparkling bubble gum flavor. I'm not really a fan of the generic bubblegum flavored drinks and candy, so this won't be a repeat buy either.

Conclusion

https://i.ibb.co/SJTNZsq/IMG-4178.jpg

I really think this was an overall nice loot, only a few misses were there (it will be hard for me to ever forget the texture of that mint cookie...)

And as promised, for every new blog, I will fix an older blog. This time I decided to fix up an earlier DIY candy kit blog:
Popin' Cookin' - crepe DIY Kit Japanse sweets review tutorial: BLOG #42346

I have gotten the question in multiple blogs if I could translate the ingredients of the food I review. This is not possible for me, as my Japanese is not that good. If you are interested in helping me out with translating, please shoot me a message!

Thanks for reading my blog! My next blog will be a merchandise loot blog, hope to see you there!

Uh Japan? Can we talk?

Meanwhile in my home country:

They're made of chocolate.

It's interesting you brought that up, though! I absolutely did not think about it as an issue until you said it. :P

stars_n_kissesHace 1 mes#78220170Nice review - I might give such type a review a try, too (Considering my coming Candysan delivery has a Okinawa Lychee drink with it.)
Some things to comment to:
- Those star candies happen to be called Kompeito (Thanks to CLAMP's Kobato)
- As kcf1117 said, it would be intersting to see those enviromental guideline, though I do noticed it on say recent Kitkat packages it's coming to fruition somehow
- Seems like my tongue to the mint flavour better on. As for the recent flavours (Berry mix and Watermelon) do you plan to give them a shot or did the Mint Taiyaki killed it for you?
- As soon you showed the pizza chips featuring Spider Man, this damn thing has to popped up my head, so thanks for that XD : www.youtube.com...

I always love to see more candy/snacks/drinks reviews! :D

I didn't know the star candies had an official name, so I'll add it to the blog, thanks! :) And oh, what did the Kit Kat packaging you had say? Something about improved materials?

I might be interested in one of those Taiyaki cookies again, but I don't want to try anything 'wild' soon. Maybe just try their basic chocolate or strawberry flavor next to see if I dare any others. :D This was my first time buying a Puku Puku Tai.

And LOL I was completely expecting this video instead:

CloudberryHace 1 mes#78220193I'm very curious about the Puku Puku mint cookie lol. I had an ice cream that actually tasted like mint toothpaste and I thought that was pretty bad.
And those melon gum are bomb. I grew up eating chewing on those! The flavor goes away quickly but at least they don't become really hard after a long chewing session.

OH NO. That must be like...licking frozen toothpaste? If they had just used mint only, like the herb, it could have been nice...maybe? I mean, I like mint tea, so...

I had no idea they were so wide-spread in the USA, another user was talking about them as well! It might be worth it to try to buy a bigger range of flavors later. :)

galablueHace 1 mes#78220151I love living vicariously through a blog like this! I am vegetarian and don't eat fish so I am always wary of getting a mixed candy/food bag from Japan as you don't really know what you'll get. However I love Japanese sweets and food so it's super fun to read. Actually, I grew up eating that gum -- the melon flavor to me is very subtle and refreshing. The strawberry one is another favorite. Grape's always the one me and my brother threw out. I think the last one is orange? Can't remember.

Happy to hear you enjoyed it so much! :D A lot of Japanese food and snacks have 'hidden' fish-related ingredients in there and there is possibility for gelatin in candies. I think you are the most safe sticking to chocolate, cookies and drinks from Japan, but always good to try to read up on the ingredients before buying. :)

Ah, I had no idea the gum came in multiple flavors (I guess they are randomized in the Yaokin Pack)! The melon one was pretty neat as well.

victorviperHace 1 mes#78220115Okonomiyaki is really pretty easy to make - it's no more difficult to make than a pancake. You just mix up the batter, add some cabbage, and then fry it with whatever toppings you want. I usually make mine western style with bacon, bonito flakes, Japanese mayonnaise, and sauce (I usually just use a mixture of ketchup and Worcestershire sauce).
I don't eat it too often (leftovers don't keep too well and it's not exactly health food!), but it's an interesting change of pace every now and then.

Huh~, for some reason I always thought it was way more complicated (because I don't have any kind of big grill as well). And hehe, I guess it's a way to make sort-of healthy ingredients quite unhealthy, just like any kind of deep fry! I'm still very intrigued to try it at one point, but the Shin-Chan kit is up first! :)

MaakieHace 1 mes#78219973Fun fact: antacid over where I live now tastes like licorice. ^^''' Licorice would have been better than eating toothpaste.
Oooh, so are you good at making okonomiyaki? Is it hard to do? I have recipes stored on my computer to make it one day, but for some reason I keep on skipping them and cooking other things when I make a new pick.

victorviperHace 1 mes#78219727Everything in there looked pretty good, with the possible exception of the giant antacid mint cookie.
It will be interesting to see a full review of the okonomiyaki/beer set. Every now and then, I try to make okonomiyaki at home, and so it should be interesting to see what the candy-fied version ends up looking/tasting like.
