Little Mermaid (Fairy Tale Another) - 1/8 Myethos - ReviewLittle Mermaid (Fairy Tale Another) - 1/8 Myethos - ReviewReview

Hello again,

on today's menu is fish. Or to be precise the Little Mermaid of the 'Fairy Tale Another' series of Myethos. Because Myethos is a Chinese company there is no data base entry for this figure. The list price on the manufacturer site is 19800JPY. She comes in scale 1/8, but better prepare some space... you will see what I mean.

Disclaimer: As in all of my reviews, there are a lot of micro fabrics in the air which love to connect to freshly unpacked plastic. Don't worry if you see such stuff, that is not related to the product quality at all. This review is as picture heavy as ever. Some pictures of the top area are a bit repetitive as I tried to focus on different parts. That was not so easy because of the pose and water effect all around. Okay, let's start!

I usually don't write much about the box, but this one is really beautiful yet simplistic. Front and sides are transparent with some ornaments and only the most necessary text. I like that.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708011703_ae40013cf5_h.jpg

But I like the back even more. Still simplistic, but beautiful. I would love to display the box but this will be hard because it is damn huge.

Top view.

The box was hard to open, probably because I was extra cautious to do not damage it. Your biggest enemy will be this... thing. I have no idea how it is called in English. It's very sturdy so it wont bend much. Take your time opening it (if you care about the back).

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708011213_6fcc93c19c_h.jpg

The inside looks quite nice too. Unfortunately the top will fold down without the blister inside. You have to tinker a bit if you want to display it from that side.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708545041_d9e96e5f0c_h.jpg

Enough talk about the box. Here comes the blister. The figure is very well protected. There was enough foam around each critical part. They even secured the point of the dagger with a little... thing. My English vocabulary is really top notch today! Be careful, there are no tapes connecting both halves of the blister. It was tightly shut anyway but still, be careful.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708866752_2ed9495805_h.jpg

Random picture: It felt like I was unpacking some vase or high quality glass. That felt oddly satisfying. By the way, it's only one piece.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708866237_85ac473b6c_h.jpg

A little artwork in post card size is included. Not bad. I would not have complained if it was bigger, it's a nice artwork. Apparently you can get a wall scroll of this, but I don't know if this was some sort of limited offer deal or has to be bought separately.

I proudly present: "The egg"! That code name will be attached to memory forever...

Wow, the water effect works better than I expected. Apart from the water there are lot of clear or semi transparent parts. All of them are of a high quality. I guess cleaning this figure will be a pain. I don't want to scratch the water outside and the inside is hard to reach. That's why I want to remove the dust with an air-pump or something like that.

Now the pictures will be repetitive, but the focus changes. Starting with the ornaments on the top: The petals on her forehead look really good, even zoomed in like that.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708916812_0a3f2b57f8_h.jpg

From a bit farther away. Please take a moment to look at the ear. As I said, the clear parts are top notch. You can even see the strands of hair behind it clearly.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708917307_78c0666f03_h.jpg

The bracelets on her arms are nicely crafted too and have a good paint job for the little size they are in.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708060413_963eb68c3e_h.jpg

Her face has a sad expression matching the tragic scene. The lips are very fine and small. I like that look, it makes the face more graceful. Well, at least that's my impression. I guess some may think the lips are too small.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708601536_f247b464d9_b.jpg

The hair is good and bad. Although "bad" is maybe a bit harsh. The good part: It has a nice and clean cast. It has a dynamic pose and it balances out the wave/water effect. Here you can see what I mean:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708073013_c9cd66e240_h.jpg

The hair and water is a good pair from all angles. This is thought through very well and one of my favourite aspects about the overall look.

Man, I really like the flow of the hair. There are two fish which even have a bit of a gradient painted on them (not really visible on the pictures, sorry).

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708073528_b7d40718ca_h.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708930037_ff4a0354f4_h.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708608606_9a35503a0b_h.jpg

The bad: The painting is very flat. You can even say there is no painting at all, it's just one colour. I can understand it production wise as good hair painting is hard to pull off. Especially if it is that much hair in such a pose, but still it's boring colorwise.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708608151_9aa4fa099c_h.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708072678_c8948b93d3_h.jpg

The dagger is breaking the colour palette with its vivid red. It's a good accent and emphasizes it's disruptive role in that scene. Great, now I sound like an art student... Let's tone it down a bit: It's red, looks nice.
Her hands are also well crafted. I almost forgot: The dagger can be turned in the hand. (Please ignore the fabrics)

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708671031_863758fef2_h.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708992592_45fb3e399f_h.jpg

I first thought it's a bit weird pose for her hands, because the top hand has a bit free space to the dagger. But after thinking about it for while I guess it's a "realistic" pose for what she is going to do. Judge for yourself. Anyhow, it's a dramatic pose fitting to the scene.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708682121_1e4ea0b2a1_h.jpg

The collar is painted good enough for its size, but you can see a little spot underneath it (directly under the gem). That is not paint, it looks like a hole. Maybe the gem should have been placed inside it, I don't know. It's barely visible from normal angles/distance so I can live with it. Fortunately it looks almost like some sort of shadow of the gem, so it's even less flashy.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708669656_41119a5b17_h.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708677246_be5c839847_h.jpg

The last thing on the top half is her... bra? Swimsuit? Top? What's the correct term for mermaid clothing? Whatever, it's a mixed bag, but is is tending to the better side. I like the design and colour palette. There is even a gradient on the small strap part. The pattern on the bright area is splendid.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708990642_cb17020f70_h.jpg

But as you can see from this side, the gold is a bit messy and bleeding into the other parts. It's okay, but could have been better.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708678531_aef28d9489_h.jpg

The skin tone is also flat, but her torso is nicely shaped.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708148823_4098bbdbf8_h.jpg

There is a lot going on in the middle section. A big golden chain is wrapping around her whole body. The gold is very bland, no shades or highlighting. You can even spot some seam lines. It looks cheap.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708686881_4b1fd00aa2_h.jpg

The gems are okay. Also a bit bland, but okay. They distract the viewer from the bad gold parts.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708686691_a194feb3a1_h.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708686511_059d589b50_h.jpg

The skirt and fins on the other hand are very nice. Look how clear the gem shimmers through the fin. (the white spots are dust)

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49709007747_e809b53f31_h.jpg

The decorations on the chain continue on her back. As you can see, it is not so bad if you give the chain some distance. But nevertheless, the golden chain is the worst part of the figure for me.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49709007567_13f2a4c494_h.jpg

Her scales have a sharp cast. There is a little gradient between the white and blue part, but apart from that there is no shading or colouring at all. It sill works because the scale throw shadows on its own.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708693681_5744a00087_h.jpg

There are transparent ribbons running down the whole mid section. That's good, as the scales alone would look a bit boring probably. As always, the transparent parts are top notch.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708158423_df1b62459d_h.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708158183_563cbc9272_h.jpg

There are two fish at one ribbon. Their colouring is not as good as the blue ones at her hair, it's just white without any shading. But the faces and overall cast is clean.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708160348_c068f0eb2f_h.jpg

On the base below are two more fish.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49709016567_b535b173bf_h.jpg

The tail is so-so again. I love the fins, nothing to complain about that. But the scales suffer from the missing shading and highlights much much more than the white part. The scales are in a sideways direction and are getting smaller and smaller towards the ends. For that reasons they don't cast a natural shadow and look cheap.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49709021942_3c406eae29_h.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708700351_7833c0ebfb_h.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708705871_5b398f9da4_h.jpg

Here you can see the gradient on her back (right side), that part is "okay"-ish. Apart from that it's just to plain. The corals are a bit better, but still far away from a interesting paint job. Maybe I am a bit harsh on the corals as they are "just" part of the base.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708707916_b7b81e2e4b_h.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708707716_0f9e598111_h.jpg

Speaking of base, it goes without saying that this is an incredible base. The water "egg" looks awesome, the corals are maybe a bit plain but the ground looks just good overall.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708173048_a19b457208_h.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708175153_af2bb69442_h.jpg

The base itself looks like wood. I like the plate with the name, as the design reminds me of the typical bases for model ships or trophy frames of caught fish.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49709031302_a0183f4212_h.jpg

In the introduction I said to prepare some space... She comes in scale 1/8 but easily towers above 1/7 figures

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49708714296_4c4aefc6e1_b.jpg

We have reached the bottom of the sea (end of review). Hard to give a objective verdict.

What do I like?

- The cast is in all very good. Only issues I saw is the little hole under her collar and the seam line on the golden chain.
- The pose and overall arrangement of everything is awesome.
- The transparent parts are superb.
- It's a mermaid, haven't seen one in a while.
- The base, obviously.

What do I not like?

- The painting is overall very flat.

Worth the price?

That's the question. I have many figures which cost much less and have a better paint job. But the figure is huge. The base and water egg is really cool and I guess it pushes the costs up quite a bit. But I have no idea, maybe I give that point to much weight. Judge for yourself.

Am I glad that I bought her?

Yes!! I like the figure very much. The overall composition is beautiful and impressive. It's definitely a center piece on the shelf and will stand out. I guess you can do some incredible work with some LED spots directed at the waves. I have to try that out, but proper lighting of the shelves is a project far far away...

Until then, I wish you a calm sea and bye-bye!

Tuxmichlhace 16 días#80949852I meant only temporary to fix the lean, but yes. For that figur it would be annoying...
Wow, 25 is less than I expected. Guess I should keep an eye on her.

yes, 25 is quite low, she is the ONLY figure i have that is leaning from the heat. I keep my room pretty cool due to the high cost of figurines.

Myethos is a china company, so... I had some doubts about quality. Maybe the plastic isn't as sturdy, but then white rabbit held out ok... Maybe it's just the structure of the mermaid, to many floaty parts.

for a 300 CDN figure, i'm a bit salty.... Hopefully the color doesn't change with age later. Then I will cry.

Support system would be super annoying tho... and kind of a eyesore.

Tuxmichlhace 16 días#80949798Uff, that's a pain! :-( May I ask how high the temperatures was at your place? Mine is still standing straight.
Hmm, fixing that looks hard. There is so much stuff all around. I guess the water bubble is sturdier than the figure and corals. Maybe you can place some kind of suporting stick between the water and the figure? (It's obvious, but put something soft between stick and figure/water to avoid scratches^^) But I am not sure if this maybe deforms the water egg or even the figure.
The only other way that comes to my mind is being creative and build a fancy supporting construction from above or from the side to push/pull her to the other direction^^ I guess the weight of the figure is enough. You just need to give her body/head something to lean against and it should fix itself (if it's still hot enough). Depending on what you have at hand I would put some plastic in between to avoid surpirses from transfered paint or other reactions of different materials.

my place the highest it went was 25, i made sure to turn on the AC when it got that high. The coral touching the water has now left paint marks, i'll try to rub it off later or something. But yes, the water seems more sturdy then the figure itself.

The figure is still very pretty, and i'm sure small issues like this doesn't deduct from the resell value much as it's not noticable unless you compare side by side w/ another figure.

Support system would be super annoying tho... and kind of a eyesore. And also super hard to get things inside the water bubble... my fingers are not thin enough.

hope Cheshire cat will be better..... got her on preorder on amazon japan... White Rabbit held up really well to heat.

Anyone else experience this. Not sure if I should try to bend it back into shape..

Ah, with the summer weather, anyone else notice their little mermaid leaning a bit?
Mine's leaning a bit lower, so her hair is almost touching the water and her side fin touches the small water protrusion on the front.

The coral reef at the back also is now touching the water.

Also noticed (now that i've had more time to look in detail) that some parts of the water has small scratch/buff marks >.<

Anyone else experience this. Not sure if I should try to bend it back into shape..

I liked that you pointed out the paint flaws, flat colors etc.
The reviews I have seen so far are way too positive in the sense of "all is great".
Little defect details like that are interesting to me. It really helps to decide if I wat to afford such an expensive figure or not.
Anyway, great review! LOve the many pictures!
Thank you.

Thanks for your feedback! I often think I nag too much, but I guess it's gotten part of my routine to complain about everthing during the first look and then forget about all issues once the figure is in the shelf ^.^

TuxmichlHace 4 meses#77090715Sure. I got her and most of my other figures from anime-figuren.de. I would highly recommend that shop, but sadly it seems there is only a german version of the home page. Maybe it works with translate via chrome? The seller is also very friendly and supportive, so contacting him directly should also work if you find something of interest in his shop.
Thank you for your answer! I will take a look one of these days ^^
