Review: Urameshi Yuuske - ARTFX J (Kotobukiya)Review: Urameshi Yuuske - ARTFX J (Kotobukiya)

Good morning everyone! ( ゚▽゚)/ ... Or afternoon, haha!

I have a pretty busy day today filled with school work and seeing my best friend for dinner, but I was able to find a little bit of time to sit down, relax, and do a face mask. What's better than browsing MFC during a break? Oh -- getting a review out of the way! I have all of my figure boxes in my room and I'm almost done reviewing them ... finally, I'll be able to put them in storage and continue cleaning my room and organizing my collection.

So please enjoy my review on a figure from my favorite show, ITEM #91359 !

BACKGROUND

If you know anything about me, you'll know that I credit Yu Yu Hakusho with being my gateway into anime. I absolutely love the show and wish that Botan had her own scale -- she would be AMAZING flying around. Thanks to my mom, I have my love of anime -- she used to sit me and my little bro down on the beanbags in the living room in our small rental and hand us some cheesy chips before we would do our homework. She chose anime over western cartoons because she said they were more "tolerable" -- and I can't help but agree! ( 〃´艸`)

I've been reflecting a lot recently on the things that influence us as we grow up, and I definitely think that these moments are formative for me. Just last night I made my mom some peanut tofu from scratch and she was loving it, commenting to me how when she was growing up they weren't even allowed to talk about Japan around her grandpa. She grew up in a family of first generation Americans who were all about America and had gone through WW2, so I just think it's great that my mom can now enjoy Japanese culture along with me.

BOX

Yuuske's box is standard for the Koto YuYu boys. It features a mix of original art and product shots. It has one large front window, one long side window and one square side window, and one medium sized top window. After looking at the boxes while reviewing them, I have to say that this box is probably the best -- purely for the fact that the original art of Yuuske reflects his figure. In the other boxes, (Hiei for example), they show his original art with accessories that he doesn't come with. Check out the spoiler for some more angles of the box!

FIGURE

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392667.jpeg

Such a simple figure, but a really great one! I absolutely love the addition of Pu on his head. Check out the spoiler for some other angles of Yuuske.

Before I get into reviewing the figure, I thought I'd do a brief overview of him without Pu and his jacket. I never display him like this and don't see why anyone would.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392666.jpeg

Please note the paint transfer on his shoulders. He also has this on his back. Yuuske is definitely better with his jacket, as his arms have some pretty bad seams in my opinion. I really like how Koto paints/sculpts the muscles on this line of boys.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392671.jpeg

Out of the entire line, Yuuske has my favorite base for two reasons. The first is that there are no risers underneath his base, making him the most stable out of the line. I am guessing they made him first and then based the rest of the boys off of his proportions. The second reason is that I feel like his base perfectly matches his finger gun move!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392672.jpeg

Yuuske's shoes are patent black leather dress shoes (school uniform). I think they're pretty minimal but I like the finish on them.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392673.jpeg

My favorite part about the pants are probably the back. I think they fold really nicely behind the knee and are painted with great dimension. The folds in his pants are just great (around the shoes as well).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392674.jpeg

The front of his pants is sculpted really nicely as well. I like how it hangs realistically, as if the belt is really keeping up his school uniform pants.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392675.jpeg

The belt stands out nicely from afar, but the buckle is a little messy (not too bad though).

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392676.jpeg

I really love how his pants come up like this, looking like they are actually on the figure rather than part of the same sculpt. And, um, yeah -- don't mind me just staring at his abs ԅ(♡﹃♡ԅ). Honestly, the sculpt/paint on these guys is amazing when it comes to their muscles.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392677.jpeg

The fantastic painting is especially showcased in his collarbone. Just amazing! I think he looks super strong. The jacket also wraps nicely around, allowing just a peek of those muscles.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392678.jpeg

Yuuske has some pretty nice fingers. They're a little pointy in my opinion but I appreciate the sculpt.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392679.jpeg

His bandages along his forearms are painted and sculpted pretty well. I think there's some solid definition here that makes them look like they are actually wrapped.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392680.jpeg

The jacket, from the back, exhibits some pretty nice folds. I always love when a figure looks great from all angles!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392681.jpeg

My favorite part of the jacket is probably his right sleeve. I feel like it's really blowing in the wind. For being a stationary figure with a pretty boring pose, this sleeve helps a lot.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392682.jpeg

The buttons are painted nicely on the figure, no sloppy painting in the jacket.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392683.jpeg

The collar looks a little off from the back, but who's looking at that?

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392684.jpeg

I actually don't hate Yuuske's head/neck seam. It looks pretty good and gives him some definition along his jaw.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392685.jpeg

Yuuske's expression is not as defined as it is in the product shots on the box. I still think he looks pretty intimidating, and I like the look they gave him, but his mouth lacks a little bit of definition and shading along his lips. I really like how they painted his eyebrows, though.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392686.jpeg

Alright, alright. Let's get into the hair. Yes. I love it. I feel like how they did his hair is how every shonen from the 90s looks. You don't need a big fancy hair sculpt here -- you just need an intelligent paint job. His pompadour, with the green shading, is awesome. It gives me total Yuuske vibes immediately, and I am living for it!

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392687.jpeg

But here's the real star of the show! Pu! ۹(˒௰˓)۶ I love how he sits on his head, and his deer in headlights expression plays fantastic off of Yuuske's stern stare. I would never display him without Pu, and I'm so glad he was included. I guess you could also put him next to Yuuske, but he looks great on his head. He is connected by magnet so you can kind of play around with his angle.

COMPARISONS

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392688.jpeg

ITEM #133961 (BLOG #43965) has kind of grown on me since I first reviewed him. Swapping out his arm for this one has helped a lot in terms of displaying him. Both boys exhibit a nice clothing sculpt/paint, but MAN -- is Yokou tall and heavy. Bummer that Yokou's base risers totally make him subject to tipping.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392689.jpeg

I think that ITEM #91356 (BLOG #44956) and Yuuske look better next to each other than Yokou and Yuuske do, to be honest. I just love these boys and I'm so glad I can display them next to each other.

https://static.myfigurecollection.net/upload/pictures/2020/02/20/2392690.jpeg

I wouldn't necessarily put ITEM #78405 (BLOG #44906) and Yuuske next to each other, but there is just something about his and Homura's no nonsense expression that I find appealing. These two figures look great next to each other despite being from different shows and manufacturers.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Yuuske is pretty well done for being a stationary figure. I like that he comes with several display options (jacket on/off, Pu on/off/next to him). I really love the simple approach that they've taken with his hair, and his musculature sculpt/paint is very lovely. Biggest bummers to me are the lackluster posing, high probability of paint transfer, and arm seams (when jacket is off).

These boys are pretty difficult to find, so if you're a fan of the show I would jump at the opportunity to get Yuuske! I think he definitely looks great on my shelf. Just make sure that if you're buying preowned to double check if he has paint transfer not only on his shoulders, but on his back as well. Also, Yuuske seems pretty good on his base but I did not try to take him off due to the issues I've had with Kuwabara's base.

I hope you guys have a great rest of your day! Now I'm off to go do homework. Wish me luck! (`・ω・´)9

This is a great review on a figure (and whole division of the industry) that I haven't looked into. I completely got carried away with your enthusiasm about the character, and it's really refreshing to read a review in which the writer cares so much (on an almost personal level) about them.

Nice job! :)

galablue (Hace 1 mes) #75841357Thanks for your comment! I wish I had all of the guys, but rose whip Kurama is just too expensive now. Have you had any issues with your bases, or do you display them without?
I haven't bought Genkai but I was looking at her ... I probably won't purchase her but if Botan somehow magically appeared I might have to do that! My ultimate dream would be GSC to remake the YuYu boys, Botan, and Genkai ... but I know that's a pipe dream!

No worries, enjoyed reading your review. :) That sucks :(, I see what you mean, he's on Solaris but yeah way more than I paid for him, which I think was about £60.00. I haven't, as I found that the reason why Koto made them different sizes is so the all go together, so can display them as the whole group, I don't really like them, as I think they don't enhance the figure in any way honestly. I haven't tried displaying them without, I'm not if they would stand up without falling without them. Could try that as it would save me some space.

Genkai has tanked in the aftermarket, I was shocked that she is still on AmiAmi as she was released ages ago, so obviously people weren't all that fussed over her sadly. I would love a Botan and hell yeah, if they did all them from GSC that would be amazing!!!

RockGodItachi (Hace 1 mes) #75823435I agree with you though YuYu Hakusho is an awesome series and I'm so glad I have all the guys in my collection, as they just look amazing together! Did you get Genkai from Union Creative? ITEM #800178 I've been arguing about her now for ages as I'm unsure whether she will fit in with the rest. Oh and hell yes we need a Botan figure!

A very comprehensive review! I have this one and I have to agree with you about the seam lines on the arms when you display him without his jacket, they just look awful, the jacket just makes him that more interesting and intimidating. I love they included Pu with him as yes that pose is enough to strike fear into his enemies but with Pu on top of his head it adds a comedic effect which will defuse any tension even with that serious look on his face!
