Penny for a 2018 Collector's ThoughtsPenny for a 2018 Collector's Thoughts

My final figure for 2018 arrived nicely and fittingly on 31st December 2018.

2018 marks the first full year of collecting figures for me, having started this hobby mid June 2017 - and it has been one fulfilling, fun hobby so far.

I can't really pinpoint the reason but I guess I have always loved the nature of being a collector. When I was younger, I adored collecting special/limited edition Barbies (achievement-reward system by my parents XD), plastic toys, plushies, toy series and the likes. Then I stopped altogether because there were eventual commitments as I got older; I had to study (in two foreign countries during my phase of higher education), pay the car loan, housing loans, amenities etc.

I have been a fan of the world of anime/manga forever; having watched Pokemon, Digimon, Cardcaptor as a kid - and then moved on (pretty late) to bigger Shonen series of Naruto, Bleach when I was in university. By chance, a friend exposed me to the world of Japan-based figures in 2017... and I was hooked ever since.

I love looking at artsy stuff and to own them especially in the hard copy representative of a favourite character - it's just a very nice feeling. My family and friends think I am crazy (naturally, given that they have no predisposition whatsoever to anime) but they have gradually gotten used to it over time. XD

There were definitely some unhealthy points that I experienced - I got obssessive during my first few months of collecting and would be constantly checking figure stores and websites ALL the time (still do, albeit at much less crazy frequencies) and getting anything that looked good. And it was dangerous, because I was and am (thankfully, so far) in a stable job so I felt little to no worries.

Shortly, the guilt started especially when I realized the first few figures weren't even what I had truly wanted. So what I did was cut down on my fashion spending (I naturally don't do makeup or handbags or alcohol or cigs - but I do go off the deep end when it comes to clothes) and sold off the figures I didn't want (and bonus, earning a little bit extra from the sales). The feelings soon let up, and I slowly started to practice a more judicious way of buying figures.

I discovered that the thing with collecting figures, is that the more figures I own, the more I discovered what my preferences are for the figures I truly want - the figure style, dynamics, even the manufacturer. This helped finetune my current small collection AND my wishlist, and I think I am in a pretty good place.

My real life hasn't been great the past year of 2018 - major family issues arose (the wholesome family turned out to be not so wholesome after all), emotions broke loose but I made some advances in my career so it wasn't downs all the time.

Through it all, I had my little hobby to sustain me - and I believe it really did, to a significant extent so I wouldn't lose my mind. I am in the middle of creating backgrounds for my display cabinet. But for now, some old images of my collection:

It is in my list to finally step foot in Akihabara (whether as a solo traveler or with like-minded people XD) and bask in the glory of figure goodness. I have been to Japan twice in the last two years, missing all the manga/anime goodness there because 1) I was not into this hobby in 2016 and 2) My group of friends refused Akihabara in 2017 and dragged me off somewhere else. But I did manage to attend the Jump Anniversary in 2017 in Osaka and Tokyo.

This late start to the collecting hobby has been one of the better things in my life in 2018, it lends a separate breathing space called LEISURE which I have never had before.

Late, but better late than never.

evenstar88 (Hace 2 meses) #47283228Thanks for reading, and for the kind comment! You seem to be good at restraining yourself, it has just been 4 months into your figure collection - and it took me more than half a year before I started feeling guilty XD
And good luck for setting up your display - I think the experimentation bit with display is quite fun, at least it is for me currently. I have limited display space and half of my figures are in boxes but I will be getting more Detolfs soon :)

Thanks so much! I am trying to have some restraint -.- but for me I had a sudden by jump in income from part time, but also many more bills! I still find it easy to justify purchases, which I am trying to keep myself from. Haha.

I have just a small display now and the main issue isnt space its sunshine. I have many windows which I am paranoid about letting my figures be anywhere near, so setting up another shelf where the sun isnt direct is hard. And my apartment owners is very mean about using extra curtains and annoying in general. I had a mouse problem and they barely helped, I just spent three weeks crying and freaking out. Not that I dont like mice, they are cute as pets, but this one was making a mess and being scary. So as soon as my lease is up I am moving. When that happens I will go for some prettier displays! :)

LemonMIntCat (Hace 2 meses) #47282910I enjoyed reading this! I have a very similar experience as well, so I can relate. I just started collecting in June, though I got my first figure in August(EZ Nendoroid Link- my nendo love had begun). I found that I maybe bought too much right away as well because I just got a better paying job, I was just a part timer before.
I think I will be slowing down a bit as well. Its like you said I want my collection to be made of things I really like. Though it is as you said some of the figures I am selling because I bought them as they looked really good, the guilt you described is real! But they are going to people that will be happy with them! But aside from those few I do like what I have and they make me happy! I just need to display them a bit nicer, but that may take a while (planing to move apartments).
And I agree with checking sites too much in the start. Amiami is always a suggestion on my internet home page. Though most of my collection I would say is just about complete now, aside from small goods stuff which I like to check for! They always go fast.

LoveChopper (Hace 2 meses) #47223651Heading to Akihabara is still in my bucket list which I am trying to achieve
I hope to do that in 1-2 years' time. No matter how many times I have been there, Japan will always be one of my favourite travel countries :)
