adorablerocket (hace 4 años) #2324446I take everything too seriously, it's what I do!
I enjoyed Magical Girl Komugi - basically just because of Komugi. She's one of my favorite characters from one of my favorite designers. She's basically a parody of all that is moé-moé, and at the same time is super appealing and fun.
I can see how POP's original Moetan does the same thing, but I found the anime to be too full of filler and straight ecchi. I'm sure those weaknesses are there in Magical Girl Komugi as well, but she's such an amazingly well executed and memorable character that she totally overshadows the show and it's failings.
In general I find that Aiko Wanatabe's work translates very well to anime. His illustration style just loves the graphic short cuts required for hand animation. Super graphic, super stylish, super cute! It's a real heir to traditional woodblock printmaking. Soultaker is still the best in my opinion, but Bakemonogatari renders his characters very well also.
I know that feeling. When I was younger I bought small figures and trinkets instead of saving up properly for nice things...
P.S. I was in Akiba yesterday at Radio Kaikan and I saw a few actually nice Moetan scale figures. They reminded me to go finish this conversation... and also not to buy things just 'cause I like them and the price is good!

I also love Komugi, because...she is Komugi! I didn't like the SoulTaker anime when it comes to the story, but I just fell in love with her as a character! Then later on she also got her own (parody) anime and I loved it to bits! There can't be enough Komugi for me!

And haha, indeed to me, Moetan does the same thing! I do have to agree with you there that Komugi is a way more memorable character than Pastel Ink will ever be when it comes to personality. I think that I am more interensted in Moetan as an anime, but I when it comes to character I like Komugi more! ^^

When it comes to (animation) style, the Soultaker shows Aiko Wanatabe's style the best, but to me the story was just...eh, which is why I can't call it one of my favorites. I here have to shamefully admit I still didn't start watching Bakemonogatari, although I have been wanting to watch it for years! I'm also a fan of NisiOisiN's writing (especially Zaregoto and and the Death Note novel), so it's really because of lack of time I didn't start on it yet!!! D: Shame on me! D:

Yeah I used to be the type that would get tempted way too quickly with buying lots of small items, so I could never properly save up to buy any bigger items...but now I have my priorities better and I have been looking in a very serious way at my collection the last few years!

Moetan has quite a lot of nice scaled figures! I'm currently not actively "hunting" them, but I want to expand my Moetan-collection for sure! (I'm so jealous of jou being in Akiba hahah! I hope that is possible for me in the future too!)

Hrmm, I think actually you have taken Moetan too seriously! ;) Even if you look at the name, it's supposed to be a parody. It even jokes in some episodes about how you should never use the English you "learn" in the series! To me it's just like how Nurse Witch Komugi is a parody on (cosplay)idols. (Not sure if you've seen that series, but I think it's so cute!) I have to admit btw that I think in animated form, so far I haven't seen a series that has represented POP's art as cute as his artwork and figures based on his art. Looks like it's quite hard to get his interesting artstyle right.

Maakie (hace 4 años) #2320116it's actually that when I was younger and had my first paying job (when still living with my parents) I spend almost everything on small items and trading figures.

adorablerocket (hace 4 años) #2317577Actually I think POP's Kittlyer has more sexiness going on, especially because of her being in a lot less clothes and only a bra at the top. But POP's style is so cute, that even when he makes very ecchi stuff, it still looks so innocent and not perverted at all. (I guess you have also seen Moetan? I love how that series can still remain so cute and nice without getting overly perverted.)
Yeah that Nekomura is expensive. @.@ That's why I have been holding back to buy her. I like her a lot, but I want to focus more on other things I like to collect more, of which some are also cheaper.
As an Art History major I have to laugh - it's always up the the viewer how the final artwork combines with your experience and context to create a unique impression!
I personally find POP's to be quite innocent, despite showing a lot of skin. To me it looks like a swimsuit, and because it's for a child it's actually quite modest with the little skirt.
I was just remembering that I *had* seen Moetan and was feeling bad about what a total waste of time and brain cells it had been... I think I was tempted into watching it because I find POP's source material illustrations *super cute*, but the otaku focused work that gets created - from anime to figures - is actually pretty rotten. Yesterday I remembered I bought a bag of Moetan figures on some trip because I was so excited to pick up something ... but ... now I wish I'd just invested in his fairy tale books!
It's actually liberating to properly catalog everything I've picked up on MFC because it's helping me realize what I want to focus on and what I like and would want to display... I should just make a list of all those figures that I *like*, but don't *wish* for!

Haha, yes that is true! :P Interesting how you say it looks like a swimsuit to you, because to me it always felt more like a bra and a skirt. xD POP indeed has a lot of innocent art, but when you think about it, his characters show quite a lot of skin or are in very tight-fitting clothes.

Haha, I'm currently still busy with adding everything to my profile! Seems like we did a lot the same when we were younger...but with me, it's actually that when I was younger and had my first paying job (when still living with my parents) I spend almost everything on small items and trading figures. Only recently I have been looking into everything and slowly putting things up for sale. :P

adorablerocket (hace 4 años) #2314671Ughh... not just that. The combination of crazy ruffle platform boots, and garters too put it in a weird place where I can appreciate the cuteness, but there's too much overt and intentional sexiness going on. I don't mind sexy cute, I just don't want to collect it, and now that I think about it, it'd be even weirder to display with POP's innocent cute.
I mostly buy used in Japan or Taiwan or on Ebay, and just end up pr-eordering on Ami Ami or Hobby Search. On Ebay at least there's a bunch of Mikans, but the cheapest is $70 USD!
Hmm... you know I'm glad I had this chat, because now I'm convinced I want to let Shizuku and Iroha find another home. Selling online is such a pain, but I do need to start putting some structure and limits on my collections.

I also thought the garters were very out of place, especially because she is not really in an "sexy" outfit. I sold mine, because I bought one pre-owned and it turned out to be missing her hairpiece (so she had a hole in the back of her head). -.-' I'm not sure if I will buy another (complete) one of her again, I first actually want to get their scaled ones before looking back at the prizes.

Awwwwww, but it's good that you made a choice! I hope you can sell them well! I see you live in the US, so that's already a good start, because that gives you a lot of chance to sell them on here and on eBay. (For me selling to most English speaking collectors turns out into nothing, because the shipping from my country to them is way too high even before we talk about the amount the person would like to give for the figure. X_X)

Hrmmm fetishy? Because of the shape of her dress that makes you have a look underneath?

Ah, Mikan is so cute! But I rarely see her for sale...she must be pretty hard to get. Personally I want this Nekomura Iroha ITEM #70385 the most!

adorablerocket (hace 4 años) #2311978I own this figure too (picked it up cheap in Taiwan), and I actually kind of have grown to hate it.
I bought it because the theme and the POP illustration were so cute, but she really falls short. I think I've only kept her so that I could display her with my Nekomura Iroha ITEM #63239 , but I'm not sure I'm actually a fan her either - aside from the super cute umbrella her outfit just a bit too fetishy (is that a word?) for me.
I guess I really want Tachibana Mikan ITEM #78730 ... she's just soo expensive! (;_;)

Personally I don't hate her, but I defenitely don't agree anymore with this review I wrote 2 years ago. :P When I just got her I was quite happy because of her outfit and her being a frigure from a design of POP. But later this one ITEM #56238 was made of the exact same character and it looked so much better!

Hrmmm fetishy? Because of the shape of her dress that makes you have a look underneath?

I still plan on collecting more from Hello Kitty to Issho, so I have been keeping my Shizuku, with the idea of "I need her to complete the collection". Next to that I'm also a huge fan of POP, so I sort of want to hold on to it because of that.

Maakie (hace 6 años) #1031540Yes, the face is the most "off" from all the things. I especially like her clothes, that was the main reason I ordered her together with the fact that she was from a drawing from POP. The face was also a huge disappointment for me.

Maakie (hace 6 años) #1032130Yes, I normally also buy scaled figures, but I found this one for a steal on Mandarake, so couldn't help myself! >.<

Yes, she has more potential, for example, look at this: ITEM #56238 It is the same character in a different pose and as PVC. (Only that one doesn't have such a cute bra and skirt! TT^TT)

Yes, I want that one really badly ;A; But the loli bra and skirt is so cute eheheh

sailormoonmeow (hace 6 años) #1031656I know how you feel! I love the design of most prize figures, but when I get them I wish they weren't so off. I always wonder that if the figure was an extra $20 and wasn't a prize how nice the figure would be ;n; She's so cute, but has so much more potential!
