Yuigahama Yui 1/8th by KotobukiyaYuigahama Yui 1/8th by KotobukiyaReview

Hello MFC!

Today I'll be taking a look at the 1/8th scale Yuigahama Yui by Kotobukiya from the anime Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku (English translation is My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO). I have a confession to make, I have not seen this anime series yet. I have the files saved on my NAS (Network Attached Storage) but I just have not gotten around to watching it. Yes, I did buy a figure from a series I haven't seen, but she is just adorable and I know I will like it when I get around to actually watching it.

A little disclaimer first. As stated in my previous review, I still do not have the proper lighting setup yet. I haven't been able to really sit down and do some research into what I should buy, so if anyone has any recommendations, please feel free to PM me and point me in the right direction!

Also, all the pictures are links to the higher quality version of the photo if you wish to see more of it.

Now, onto the review!

Packaging

First, let's look at the box she comes in. The size is as following:

Height: 9.5 inches (241.3mm)
Width: 7.5 inches (190.5mm)
Depth: 5.125 inches (130.175mm)
Weight: 14.82 ounces (420 grams) (I did not weigh this, may not be correct)

The box is in a light pink with a circular opening that extends to the right side showing off the figure in the blister packaging, with a slight hint of the chair and her dog Sabure above it. There's also a picture of Sabure on the front at the bottom left. Authenticity sticker is at the top right, showing the TBS logo.

The top, left, and right sides of the box show the figure off from the front at various closeups. The back of the box shows more angles of the figure along with Sabure as well as some information about the character herself. From what I can understand, she was born on June 16th and her blood type is O. The rest is unknown to me as I do not understand that much Japanese yet. One feature I really like about the box, despite not understanding the language, is the various chat bubbles with text in it. If anyone can translate them, I would love to know what they say!

The bottom of the box just shows various information as found on all figure boxes.

Once the box is opened and the blister packaging is removed, you get a better view of the whole figure. The base, chair, Sabure, and most of Yui is wrapped in plastic, with a small piece stuck between her left hand and hair to prevent paint transfer while in transport. The instructions are taped to the bottom of the blister, but unfortunately only in Japanese. Would've been nice to see it in English as well but her assembly is very straight forward.

Overall, it is a very pleasing box to look at that shows off the figure at all kinds of angles, as well as providing information about the character herself. Each piece is nicely protected for transport and the plastic is easily removable.

Base + Accessories

Next up is her base, which, after reviewing my previous figure BLOG #23184, is a much higher detailed piece. It features an oval like piece with a texture that looks like hardwood floors in a square pattern, each with 4 planks of wood in them, creating a nice effect. It goes along with the theme of the figure, which is the school setting.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/11/01/1404861.jpeg

The included chair is nicely sculpted and reminds me of the days when I was in school! The paintwork on it is superb and the fading on the seat and backrest is executed perfectly! It gives the illusion of wear and tear. The paint on the support bars is of a glossy material while the seat and backrest is of a matte material. Both look great!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/11/01/1404863.jpeg

Lastly there is Sabure, her dog. He has been sculpted with a playful expression, with his tail wagging off to one side. The paintwork on him is wonderfully done, down to the detail on his collar and tag, as well as to his face.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/11/01/1404864.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/11/01/1404866.jpeg

Sabure isn't pegged into anything and can be moved around or removed to your liking. Maybe even used in custom displays with Nendoroids? The chair as well, it just lightly supports Yui and while it seems kinda weak, there isn't much weight being put on it.

I enjoy figures that come with a detailed base, even if it's something as simple as this. The added chair and her dog only make the figure that much more enjoyable.

Posing

Now we get to Yui herself! Her pose consists of her leaning back a bit, supporting herself with the chair, while her left hand almost seems to be moving her hair away from her face. The way she's displayed is definitely a plus in my book. I love the simplistic look of her. From what I've read, it goes with her cheerful, outgoing personality!

Sculpting

This section is for the sculpt of Yui, which is absolutely wonderful! Let's start with her hair. The separation of the hair is done perfectly. Lots of detail all around, from her bangs in the front to the side ponytail. Her ears are also very detailed, despite being mostly hidden behind the hair! Her face has nice elevation, from the pointed nose down to her chin.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/11/01/1404875.jpeg

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/11/01/1404878.jpeg

Her inner shirt's collar folds over her vest, covering the bow. Due to her turning her body slightly to her right as well as her arms at angles, there is great detail in the movement of the cloths, something you'd see in real life! This also applies to the area around her breasts. The buttons on the front of the vest are also at different angles, to help show off the fact that she is looking right.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/11/01/1404876.jpeg

Her skirt also has great detail. The intensity of the pleats in the skirt depends on where you look. For example, it is mostly flat on her right thigh, while they are most noticeable near her right hand and around her back.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/11/01/1404872.jpeg

The legs are beautifully sculpted, right down to her feet. The detail on her shoes are above average, showing off the designs on the side as well as the laces on the front and the foot print on the back.

She is sculpted wonderfully and I love having her in my collection!

Painting

Now we get to painting. First off, I will state that yes, this figure does have it's flaws. I'll cover those last.

Where do I start? She looks great! Her hair has outstanding fading in it, from the light pink at the top to the dark pink at the tips. The light blush on her cheeks is adorable. Her eyes are inviting and makes you want to stare at them. Moving down to her torso, the contrast of the white inner shirt with the peach/tan vest is beautiful. Matched with the red bow it is absolutely stunning. The added accents on her left wrist where the two bracelets are is a nice touch! Helps add a little color separation.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/11/01/1404881.jpeg

The detail on her skirt is breathtaking. The plaid look is done almost perfectly, with a very dark grey all the way to white, with a red vertical stripe in between the squares. I love the way it looks! Moving down to her stockings, it's in a nice matte paint, which is lovely. I'm more of a thigh highs myself, but these are cute. :) Her shoes are wonderfully detailed, with the green accents on the side to the tan on the sole of the shoe.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/11/01/1404887.jpeg

Now, to the flaws. While there are a few minute ones, there are two that stood out to me. I'm not expecting a perfect figure, especially from Kotobukiya, so they don't really bother me, but here they are. The first is on the front of her vest at the bottom, near the button. There is a little dark paint, likely from the vest. Nothing huge and can't be seen from a distance. Next is on her breast, near armpit. It's shiny in that region, like maybe the plastic bag rubbed on it or some other type of paint was put there by accident, but it reflects light there while the rest of her vest doesn't. Again, this is little and doesn't really bother me, but something I thought I'd bring up.

I'd give it an 8.5 but since I can't use decimals, I'll round it up.

Enjoyment

Lastly, enjoyment. Do I like this figure? Absolutely!! Overall, I really enjoy this. It's a simple figure in a school uniform, but I really appreciate that. It adds a nice touch to my collection and I'm looking forward to displaying Yukino next to her when I get her in December!

Final Thoughts

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I absolutely love this figure! She's a pleasure to look at and was an instant preorder when I first saw her, despite not having seen the anime, although I have heard of it. Before Yukino comes out in December, I'm definitely going to try and watch the series so I feel a little prepared to discuss how the character is while writing the review!

As always, thank you for reading!

Rinnzlerrhace 4 años#4437901Yeah I think a lot of collectors have that problem, I never though I'd have a 3 Detolf display when I started. I just had an area by my desk, but then I kept buying more figures lol.

At this rate, I may need to buy another Detolf myself!

Jaydehace 4 años#4433347Tell me about it! Months ago after picking up my big display case I thought to myself I'd never fill up quickly. I may have to move the Detolf back over and use that as well with all these figures coming and ones I still haven't unboxed yet!

secretly-otakuhace 4 años#4436760Thanks for the nice review! Yui is nice as a figure, but TBH, I don't like her much in the anime XP. But you should definitely watch it! It has lots of funny moments and also some very interesting ones, or at least you'll find it interesting mostly if you were kind of a "loner" during your school days, which I kinda was myself. I'm really looking forward for Yukinon since she IS definitely a great character and worthy to have in your collection if you love this anime like I do.

Thanks!

All these comments on the show is making me really want to start this soon!

GodYagamihace 4 años#4413219I never heard about this anime tbh. The figure design is simple yet very nice.
I suppose it's how it should look like anyway.

Thanks!

weiwerehace 4 años#4413179I didn't read the manga.
But usually I recommend this sequence: anime -> manga -> LN.
This is because the anime is usually the condensed version of the manga and the manga the condensed version of the LN.
Also after watching the anime, when I read the LN, I have a voice basis to imagine how the characters would speak.
(PS: I read the Japanese LN but I guess the voice could be applied to other languages too)

I was the same way with the Harry Potter series. I never got into the books when I was young but after binge watching up to the current one at the time (Half Blood Prince) I went back and read all 7 books before the Deathly Hallows were released.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't know if I'll have the time to pick up a light novel but I may try the manga at least.

Rinnzlerrhace 4 años#4413153Awesome review! I ended up passing on Yui b/c I hadn't watched the Anime yet, but I was almost in the same boat as you haha. I just had to much coming out this month to justify pre-ordering, plus not enough room as it is.

VioMarinerhace 4 años#4413139Great review and photos, really showed off all the lil details I'd check myself. Sabure is a very cute addition and the base that seemed previously dull to me is really nice. The coloring on Yui's hair and eyes is especially gorgeous. I thought I had written this Yui off but now I'm torn between Kotobukiya's and Max Factory's! Best option: get both.
You'll enjoy Oregairu, it's very well written and very different from the typical high school slice of life anime. If anything it'll make Yui shine brighter!

Thanks! I prefer this version over Max Factory's, based solely off design but after I watch the anime my opinion may change and I may pick that one up too.
