Alter 1/5 Souryu Asuka LangleyAlter 1/5 Souryu Asuka LangleyReview

It's 2015! The year of Eva. So for my first blog post of 2015, I've got a long-overdue review of an original Neon Genesis Evangelion figure, as befitting the year--Souryu Asuka Langley 1/5, by Alter, released in 2006.

I reviewed Alter’s 1/5 Ayanami Rei ITEM #945 previously BLOG #16026, so now it’s time to show you the 1/5 Asuka that goes with her. Like the Rei, this Asuka is unique and lovely, but I will concede she is the less perfect of the pair.

She has the same delicate painting that makes the Rei so lovely, especially in her hair, which was clearly painted by hand with a paintbrush and not airbrushed; in fact, it has what looks like a few visible brush strokes. Like Rei, it has the “skillfully done garage kit” feel. Not a style that’s to everyone’s taste, but I like it a lot.

The hair color of Asuka figures tends to vary pretty widely from a very dark almost brown/auburn to a bright orange or even awkward yellow shade. This figure opted for a darker shade with the right orange tone, not far off from my hair color actually (I’m a natural redhead.) Due to the shading style, the head seam is almost invisible.

The fine details of the plugsuit are all there with no stray paint marks to be found. Honestly she’s got better quality than some figures from 2014.
She’s taller than Rei since she is sitting up straight (and Asuka is canonically taller than Rei anyway), but even at 1/5 she takes up little vertical space. Like Rei, her base is a simple colored disk, red to match EVA-02. My Asuka’s base is an even red tone so this tells me that the mottled yellow of my Rei’s base probably is due to fading or age. Unlike Rei’s, I don’t think you’d find anyone who felt this one clashed with the figure. If anything it blends in too well. She can sit just fine without it though, if you prefer.

Her facial expression looks a bit anxious, fitting with Rei’s melancholy look. Asuka looks best displayed at a slight angle and to the left of Rei so that she appears to be looking nervously at her. I think it captures NGE Asuka well in a moment of isolated emotional vulnerability.
An aside. Most figures of Asuka are smiling sweetly, or look coy and inviting. I suspect this is because many Asuka fans would like to believe deep down that for them, Asuka would drop the harsh exterior and be sweet and friendly, and figure manufacturers have caught on to this. It doesn’t fly with me (it’s out of character) but evidence indicates my opinion is unusual. Consequently, I don’t have any figures of Asuka that are smiling. The only smile I would really accept would be a cocky and challenging one, but that’s very uncommon in figures of her as well.
This desire to strip Asuka both of her strong will and all the flaws and weaknesses that make her well-rounded in order to reduce her to a cookie-cutter soft-hearted tsundere stereotype says a lot about the Asuka fanboys that engage in it. To sum up without going into detail, it means they like the “idea” of Asuka, on the surface level, more than Asuka as a complete character.
Ok. Moving on.

From straight forward, her mouth sometimes looks odd, so keep that in mind. Because her open mouth is sculpted into the figure rather than painted on, lighting also makes a huge difference. Don’t light her too harshly or from directly overhead or it will cast a strange shadow.
Actually, the biggest thing I took away from making this review is that she’s a figure that looks lovely in person but isn’t very photogenic and was difficult to take decent pictures of. So please keep that in mind. She is not perfect and I wouldn't place her on the same level as her companion figure, but her good qualities outshine the odd parts when you look at her in person.
Like Rei, her eyes have been perfectly hand-painted, and aren’t decals. This is probably an aesthetic choice to match with the rest of the figure, as my other figures of roughly this age do have eye decals. Though this Asuka wouldn’t normally be on my must-get list, she matches the 1/5 Rei so I sort of had to get her. As expected, they look great together:

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2015/01/20/1198095.jpeg

One last note. Something I’ve seen mentioned by everyone else I’ve talked to about this figure is that for some reason the head will be a bit loose, and wobble around when the figure is moved. Mine is not different, and in fact, with a slight upward tug, her head is easily removed.

Now you can see the details of her back that are normally hidden by her hair, though. You can see the long, thick peg on the head. However, try as I might, I can’t get it in there firmly enough for it not to wiggle a little. It isn’t really a problem but I may try filling in the slot a little at a later time. Just be careful never to pick her up by the head.
My ultimate recommendation is that you should definitely pick this girl up, but be sure you also have Rei to go with her. Especially since 1/5 is an unusual scale, she will be lonely otherwise!

That's all for now. Happy Year of Evangelion!

Morohace 4 años#13937187No, the version I have is the linked one (under related items), by Alter, so it's prepainted, I didn't paint her myself. If you're looking to pick her up, I've seen her show up on AmiAmi's preowned and Mandarake on occasion, but you'll have to be quick--she's rare and tends to get snapped up quickly.

thanks ill keep a lookout ^-^

sakuracardcaptorhace 4 años#13901623hi love your write up, very insightful!
I want to pick this up but I noticed there are two versions? one sells for $300 and the other for $100? Do you know if there are any differences?
thank you

Maakiehace 5 años#2629379My guess is that it was too expensive to keep up an style like this with more figures, as it seems like a lot more handwork was involved and probably not everyone would pay extra for something like that. Anyway, nice review again Moro! :)
Probably. I'm sure it takes longer to paint, too, when you can't just do a few passes over the figure with an airbrush and call it done. But to think the retail price of these girls was so low considering their details and large size!
If only Alter had made a Shinji and a Kaworu to go with them as well.

Morohace 5 años#2617161Oversimplification is the greatest crime one can inflict on an Evangelion character. It's a shame.
Yeah the painting style is just so pretty and it stands out among all my figures. I wonder if these two didn't sell all that well, because I've never seen Alter or any other company do this painting style since.

kevinlowlhace 5 años#2625713Happy Year of Evangelion! Are you ready to gain a higher level of being? >:D I am relived to see your Asuka loses her head as well, haha. I'm beginning to wonder why Rei doesn't also have a removable head since it looks like Asuka's head isn't some random flaw.
One gripe I have with this figure though is the color of her boob pads(?) which are yellow, almost gold, instead of orange. I guess it goes with the rather dull color palette of this figure perhaps? Honestly, I haven't found the perfect Asuka scaled figure in her original plugsuit yet. The Kotobukiya one is meh and, as you've said with most Asuka figures, out of character.
Regarding Asuka, you're probably right about the general consensus. Personally, I think I buy figures of her (and almost everyone else from Eva) looking happy as a sort of psychological coping mechanism that comes naturally. I couldn't sleep properly for a few days after completing the series and the end movie. It was just so fucking depressing. The moment right after I finished it I was just, "WHY... ;___;". Why do so much bad shit happen to everybody and especially the pilots, they're just kids for goodness sake. I honestly felt weird about the whole Rei fandom because she's isn't what you'd normally call 'human'. But after a while, I too became a believer in the church of Evangelion lapping up everything* the franchise puts out. This psychological trauma by Gainax is super effective!
*Maybe not everything, the Q Eva Units look like shit with their new armor. I'm never getting any Q EVAs. The sleek and elegant design I've known and come to love of Evangelion Units is gone now.

The events of the series will start around early July so we've got until then to prepare our sync ratios.
I think maybe it's a case where placing the head on the body is the last step in assembling this Asuka and they just didn't glue it? It's odd.
Yeah the boob-cups are probably that darker gold/yellow because having them be bright orange would clash with the muted tones. It is a bit strange though.
I really like ITEM #141607 and ITEM #186848 for their facial expressions but one does have to make the Rebuild concession there. Alas.

Ahaaa, you want to look at them and actually see them be happy for once, because they don't get to be happy in canon? That's sort of sweet somehow.
I completed the series + End of Evangelion over the course of only 2 days so I was a fucking WRECK, lmao. I cried a lot and I was just.... I had to lay down and rethink my entire life, ahaha. But I always came back. And I don't like any of the fluffy spinoffs very much.
My boyfriend loves Rei and she was always his favorite when he first got into the series. He finds her tragic and mysteriously lovely and I appreciate her more because of him, I think.

I didn't like Q at all when it first came out but I actually do now. Not as much as the original series, because nothing will be as good as the original series, but I enjoy it for what it is and I'm really anxious to see the end. (After which I expect an anime or movie series adaptation of Evangelion Anima!)

victorviperhace 5 años#2617789Well, I have to admit that when I read that comment, I said to myself "yeah, I've been there" ;)
My take is that Asuka is certainly capable of expressing affection, albeit in a sort of passive-agressive way (like in the case of Shinji). And of course, she can be openly affectionate with Kaji, but perhaps this is because she knows he will never reciprocate that affection. She, like any human, has a need to express affection, but she can't find the right outlet for it. So, I agree, she's not going to be a sweet and lovey-dovey girl under any circumstances. You can't blame the fanboys for indulging in a little wishful thinking, though...

Yessss, yesss exactly, yes. Her open affection for Kaji is because she wants his approval, because it is predicated mostly on her pathological need for attention. It's from insecurity and loneliness. Even in a healthier state of mind, and in a healthier relationship, she would still express affection sporadically.

(I've written a fic about Asuka and Shinji's mess of a relationship because I'm fascinated by it. I should write more, it's a complicated thing.)

I can't really say I blame said fanboys for indulging in such wishful thinking either. I think it's derived from a savior complex where they think they could "fix" her. Or a desire to protect, or something similar. (Or just a desire for the character they like to give them special treatment, but that's being rather less charitable.)
