Today, we'll be taking a look at a figure of one of the archetypal moe characters, Kotobukiya's Misuzu Kamio, released way back in 2005. Minor spoilers for the Air anime may follow...

About the character: Misuzu Kamio is one of the main characters from the Air anime and visual novel. Misuzu is a sweet, cheerful, eccentric, and clumsy girl. Among her many eccentricities, she loves dinosaurs, her favorite drink is extra-thick peach nectar, and when she gets sad or frustrated her signature phrase is "Gao" (which she believes is the sound a dinosaur would make). One day, she meets Yukito, a drifter who has spent much of his life searching for a "girl in the sky". After crossing paths with Misuzu, it appears that she just might be the girl he's looking for...

Packaging----------8/10

The design of the box is pretty simple, featuring the name of the character and the show's logo. The sky theme is of course perfectly appropriate.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108283.jpeg

Both sides of the box are identical.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108284.jpeg

The back of the box features two shots of Misuzu. If you're an Air fan, you've seen that wall of text behind the photos before. If not, it reads:

The days which are wrapped in the scene of summer and to pass gently
An encounter with the girls repeated in the sunlight
Summer continues to where as well
She is waiting in the air

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108285.jpeg

The box is pretty small, measuring 13 by 26 by 11 cm, and figure and box weigh around 300 grams. It should be noted that both the figure and the base snap into the blister and so it will be necessary to bend the blister a little bit to free the figure.

Posing----------8/10

Misuzu's pose is pretty static, but it is in character. She is known to just stare away into the distance like this every now and then, and so her pose is appropriate.

Let's have a look at her.

So, the pose is not highly dynamic, but it is perfectly in character for Misuzu.

Sculpting----------6/10
Painting----------7/10

As you would probably expect from a figure that was made almost a decade ago, she has no shortage of issues with sculpt and paint. As we'll see though, the design of the sculpt is pretty good.

The figure does recreate Misuzu's appearance very well. The character designs in Air do tend to have very large eye-to-face ratios even by anime standards, and so this feature makes it into the design as well. The anime took the designs from the visual novel and toned them down just a little bit, and so I'd say this Misuzu is a little closer in appearance to her visual novel self.

Her eyes are very expressive, and her little smile is very much in character for Misuzu. Behind her sweet and kind persona, Misuzu (like all the female characters in Air) has a deep sense of sadness, and the figure nicely captures this facet of her personality.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108292.jpeg

Up close, you can see some little chunks missing and various other flaws in her hair. That's older figures for you...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108293.jpeg

The uniforms the characters wear are very distinctive, with a large cross on the front. You can see the painting in that area is pretty sloppy.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108294.jpeg

One of Misuzu's key features is this huge ribbon in her hair, and I like how Kotobukiya handled the color and shading of her hair. Her blonde hair should have a gold/brown tint to it, and Koto replicates her hair color nicely. It's nice to see a blonde character whose hair isn't bright yellow...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108295.jpeg

Now for some things that aren't so good. The area around her jaw and neck is a real mess, as is that spot where her bangs attach. You can see all kinds of excess paint which made its way onto her hair ribbon as well. I might attack that hair ribbon with a Magic Eraser, but I'm not optimistic that will have much of an effect on 9 year old paint...

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108297.jpeg

In the show, the characters' uniforms are pretty elaborate with straps in the back and a huge bow. You can see the painting on the straps and the stripe on Misuzu's collar is a little bit uneven.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108298.jpeg

Even with all her flaws (like that terrible seam running down her sleeve!), Misuzu is so very cute!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108299.jpeg

Another of Misuzu's key features is the boots she wears. Just like in the anime, her boots seem to be slightly too big for her, which further adds to the dorky-but-cute appeal of her character.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108300.jpeg

She has a seam running up her leg and the painting on the tops of her socks is a little uneven.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108301.jpeg

I would have liked to see a little more detail on the backs of her legs.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108302.jpeg

It should be noted that Misuzu's dress has a very flat black finish. As is my custom when unboxing preowned figures, I wiped her down with a damp paper towel before taking these shots and you can see every little bit of fuzz left behind.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108303.jpeg

Misuzu's pantsu shot lurks behind the spoiler tag.

Plain white is the order of the day.

Compared with never figures, I'd say Misuzu's overall finish is significantly below average, but compared with other figures from back then, I'd say she's about average finish-wise. This is not really a complaint, but it's something to keep in mind if you're thinking about tracking down this figure.

Base----------8/10

The base is fairly plain, but it is functional. The little plate for her foot is kind of a strange feature, though. Each of her feet have only a single peg, so it took me a minute to figure out which one of her feet was supposed to attach there!

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108305.jpeg

The sky theme is a nice touch, and the base is not obnoxiously large, measuring in at about 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) in diameter.

Scale Comparison

Kotobukiya's Misuzu together with Organic's Misuzu (ITEM #548). As far as I'm concerned, the Koto Misuzu is far superior, as the Organic figure distorts her features a little too much. It is worth noting that the overall finish of the Organic figure is marginally better though.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108306.jpeg

Misuzu along with Organic's Minagi ITEM #547 and Kano ITEM #550, the other female leads from the show. I think the Koto figure better recreates the design of the uniforms, as the crosses on the Organic figures seem a little bit too small.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108307.jpeg

Misuzu with two more of my favorite characters from the Key/Visual Art's universe, Fuuko Ibuki ITEM #28 and Makoto Sawatari ITEM #11.

http://s1.tsuki-board.net/upload/pictures/2014/09/28/1108308.jpeg

Misuzu with Yuiko Kurugaya ITEM #667 and Rin Natsume ITEM #61 from Little Busters! When I first unboxed Misuzu, I thought she seemed a little small, but I measure her at about 7.5 inches (19 cm) in height. At 1/8 scale, that would make her about 5'0" (152 cm) in height, which seems about correct. Newer Koto figures seem like they often skew a little large, so maybe that was messing with my mind...

Overall verdict and enjoyment----------9/10

In summary...

Arguments for: The figure captures Misuzu's personality nicely, I like how her blonde hair is not just fire-hydrant yellow, and despite Air's popularity, there aren't too many finished figures of Misuzu to choose from.

Arguments against: She has lots of issues with paint and finish, the flat black finish of her dress will show every speck of dust, and if you want to pair her up with her cast mates Minagi and Kano, there are even fewer figures of them!

Despite all of her flaws, I was ecstatic about getting this figure. Air is one of my favorite anime, and I view this Misuzu as a big upgrade over the Organic figure I've had for years. The only other finished Misuzu out there which seems like it might be significantly better is ITEM #447, and that figure is really expensive these days, regularly going for over 10000 yen preowned.

So, if you are a fan of Misuzu, this figure might very well be the one and only figure of her that you'll ever need!

Availability (as of this writing)

Not common.

If you're persistent, you should be able to track one down sooner or later, but don't expect to find her everytime you browse AmiAmi or Mandarake. I got a B/B one for 3600 yen on AmiAmi, so I'd say somewhere in that 3000-4000 yen ballpark ought to source you your own Misuzu, but you might have to persist for a while to find one.

SailorSarahhace 5 años#2479209Me too, me too. I get chills just thinking about it. Air is still my sentimental favorite Key anime and Misuzu my favorite Key heroine. I have the figure of her holding the dinosaurs. It makes me think about Misuzu's personality, which is awfully endearing.

It seems like Air is always kind of dismissed as the weakest entry in the Air/Kanon/Clannad trilogy, but it's always been my favorite as well. The chemistry between Misuzu, Haruko, and Yukito is excellent, the show's atmosphere is just perfect (it feels like a seaside town in the summertime), and like you said the ending is just chilling.

victorviperhace 5 años#2478126Misuzu really is a great character. One thing I really like about most of the Key heroines is that they are not just moeblobs; through their quirks, they can really work their way into your heart. Every time I try to watch the end of the Air anime, it just rips my guts out...

SailorSarahhace 5 años#2477622I love Misuzu! This is the only other figure of her I would like to have. I think it looks the most like her of any of her figures. Great review! You're lucky to have her.

Maakiehace 5 años#2477691Her face is indeed a lot better than Organic's Misuzu! But looking at user pictures of Movic's version I think that one looks better.
In general she looks most like the anime to me with this figure, but the art-style is just...I just can't get used to it. I watched the series and loved the story, it was really touching, but I just can't bring myself to buy any merchandise from the series because of how the eyes/faces look. ლ(ಠ_ಠლ)

Morohace 5 años#2478083I have to say, I really don't think Key art style translates well to 3D. I can't stand the art style anyway but I think it looks really bad in figure form :S
Interesting to see another review of an old figure though, so thanks!

I'd agree that the designs from Air (both anime and VN) and the Kanon VN do not translate particularly well into figure form. However, by the time the second Kanon anime and Little Busters! came to light, I think the character designs had mellowed to the point where they look fine in figure form. For example, Makoto ITEM #11 is one of the loveliest figures I've ever set eyes on!

JessicaJunghace 5 años#2477007As always, great review and you cant beat one of the classic figures from anime in the olden days.

I distinctly remember buying the first Air DVD when it was released. I'd stepped out of the office for lunch and made a quick detour to pick up the DVD. That was just the other day...looks at receipt in the case...back in 2007.

Thanks for the comment :).
