Her dress is gorgeous ❤.
Can't wait to see the prototype and don't want to see the price - I'm pretty sure it will kill my wallet...;(

Free_Phi (8 horas antes) #29734029The violet eyes are the giveaway. This is picked up from Daeny's description in the ASoI&F book series.
But Gwendolyn's eyes are violet. Look at Alter's scale from 2008 or Yamato's scale from 2011. They're both a shade of blue-purple. Even the artwork from the game has her with the same eye colour. On a wider scale, violet eyes are not unique to Daenerys... in fact it's a common characteristic for Japanese character deigns. In fact I can think of several artists who seems to have a fetish for that particular eye shade.

Free_Phi (8 horas antes) #29734029Blend that with the elegiac, mournful vibe of her depiction on GoT, and you've got this character.
Once again, that quality isn't unique to Daeny. Gwen is a valkyrie warrior princess who is struggling with self identity/discovery, so it makes sense why she's elegant and mournful. This figure is literally based on a scene that appears in the original game, I don't see what this has to do with Daeny except it has a similar mood.

Free_Phi (8 horas antes) #29734029Not sure what you mean by "doesn't matter."
I meant I wouldn't be pressed if Gwen WAS influenced by Daenerys (i.e. I'm not super invested in her character design being 100% original or not).

Free_Phi (8 horas antes) #29734029Okay, so your less observant and perceptive than Teakatt. So what?
Again, this merely bespeaks the limitations of your powers of perception and pattern recognition.

What makes you think I'm ignorant rather than the other way around? Have you considered that maybe I've just seen and read so much that none of these qualities are exclusively unique to or scream Daenerys to me?

Free_Phi (8 horas antes) #29734029Influence is not necessarily conscious. Any time an artist revisits or updates a character, he essentially throws it in a blender with everything that colored the pop-culture zeitgeist since the original was created. Daeny's "scent" is unmistakable in this piece.
I never said Gwen was 100% NOT influenced by Daeny, I just said it was equally likely she wasn't. Also it's ironic you're lecturing me about the creative process when I make my living in the creative arts field. Not that you'd know of course, but I wouldn't go around assuming everyone who disagrees with you are uncultured idiots if I were you.

Just to be clear, I wasn't arguing against Gwen being influenced by Daenerys in some way (because I don't care if she was). What I was question was your leap in logic: "there is absolutely no doubt that this figure is highly influenced by the HBO GoT character".

I would say that someone is getting very condescending and needs to go back to their GoT fancave where they belong. :P

riringo (17 horas antes) #29722166Why GoT specifically though?

riringo (17 horas antes) #29722166It doesn't matter if she was GoT inspired in some way,
Not sure what you mean by "doesn't matter." Teakatt just made an astute and apt comparison, and a provocative observation, and got quicly shouted down by a very small-minded and short-sighted voice. This whole forum is for discussing toys, which by and large don't "matter" by most metrics...

riringo (17 horas antes) #29722166 I'm a GoT fan and Daenerys isn't the first thing that comes to my mind when I see this sculpt,
Okay, so your less observant and perceptive than Teakatt. So what?
riringo (17 horas antes) #29722166The only similarities I can see are her white long hair, large round eyes and expression, but those are all part of her original design, so I can't really see how "there's absolutely no doubt" that she's influenced by Daenerys ...
Again, this merely bespeaks the limitations of your powers of perception and pattern recognition.
riringo (17 horas antes) #29722166I can definitely see similarities, but saying it's a conscious influence feels like a leap. :\
Influence is not necessarily conscious. Any time an artist revisits or updates a character, he essentially throws it in a blender with everything that colored the pop-culture zeitgeist since the original was created. Daeny's "scent" is unmistakable in this piece.
Gwenwyfar (13 horas antes) #29729629Yep, and this character has been like this even before GoT and created way before GoT was even a thing, so... I still doubt it, unless we have quotes from the artists to go by.
Oh come now, that's a discourse-crippling, reductionist, dismissive mindset entirely hostile to interesting and valid argument. You essentially dismiss any original thought a priori. I sense that that's comforting to you because it limits the universe of things you need to think about, but many like to indulge in intuition and inference...
Gwenwyfar (13 horas antes) #29729629No one will ever know for sure unless they say so.
Again, so what? Then what makes your rigid, simplistic dismissal more valid than Teakatt's fascinating and impressive sentiments?
Gwenwyfar (13 horas antes) #29729629if anything this reminds me more of Lenneth.
I don't know who that is. Did the sculptor cite it as a source??? Gwenwyfar (13 horas antes) #29729629Its as riringo has said, this style is common.
What style is that? Stormborn style?
Gwenwyfar (13 horas antes) #29729629And surely they don't use just a single artwork as a basis.
Wait...who am I hearing right now?
Gwenwyfar (13 horas antes) #29729629TeaKatt: Yep, I just wanted to point out I find it unlikely, nothing more. Sorry about that. Cheers :)
Alright good show of sportsmanship in the end there. I'll admit that I'm deliberately overstating my case to make a point. I hate to see interesting, ingenuous suggestions like Teakatt's dismissed out of hand...and with unnecessary sharpness...

You do realize that artists draw inspiration from multiple sources when creating a new work?

Yep, and this character has been like this even before GoT and created way before GoT was even a thing, so... I still doubt it, unless we have quotes from the artists to go by. No one will ever know for sure unless they say so.

Personally I still see no reason why this would be the case, if anything this reminds me more of Lenneth. Its as riringo has said, this style is common.

@Comments regarding the original artwork, I don't think the figure would have turned that good if they had followed that particular drawing to the core. The color for one would look simply off. And surely they don't use just a single artwork as a basis.

Gwenwyfar (21 horas antes) #29714538It was based off the source material, there's an image of the original artwork in some of the photos, and other than that that's just how the character is. I highly doubt they took inspiration off anywhere else really, and the game came much before GoT. Just a coincidence.

I was just thinking out loud because I noticed a few people commented saying that her face looked off from the source art and both Gwen and Daenerys have a lot in common. Also it's pretty common for everyone to take a little inspiration off of each other, nothing wrong about that. I am a little sad that you are approaching me like I am not a fan of this character. We're both just here to appreciate some good sculpts.

Anyways thanks for taking the time to read and reply :)

EDIT: Just because I feel like this observation is kind of getting out of hand, please remember that no one here is the original artist or the sculptor. Its all just conjecture and interpretation!

Why GoT specifically though? It doesn't matter if she was GoT inspired in some way, but I'm a GoT fan and Daenerys isn't the first thing that comes to my mind when I see this sculpt, since there are many Japanese artists who have a similar style to this. The only similarities I can see are her white long hair, large round eyes and expression, but those are all part of her original design, so I can't really see how "there's absolutely no doubt" that she's influenced by Daenerys when she's just as likely could have been inspired by anything else (and not by GoT at all).

Like, I can definitely see similarities, but saying it's a conscious influence feels like a leap. :\
